Dearborn County was renamed Michigan in 1889. In 1903, George Winton donated land to build what would become the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. The university's first students were undergraduate students from Dearborn County who traveled to Ann Arbor for instruction in philosophy and mathematics. In 1907, income from passenger fares on the Michigan Central Railroad allowed the university to construct a new main campus on land that had once been part of Dearborn County's rural agricultural area. Novi was founded in 1855 by Nicholas and Catharine Novi, who were born in the town of Saginaw, Michigan. The Novis ran a grocery store and post office before moving to their current location on the banks of the Rouge River in 1881. The town was renamed Novi after Nicholas' father-in-law, John Noyes. In 1924, the Novis donated land for a new public school that still stands today.
