Norton Shores is a town in Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Norton Shores is part of the Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first military gift to Norton Shores was an artillery piece donated by Captain John Fenton of the U.S. Army during World War II. The town's history can be traced back to 1824 when two brothers founded Norton on the banks of the Shiawassee River in what is now rural Washtenaw County. They named their community after Genesee County, New York, where their father had been born and raised. In 1836, four members of the Benton family moved from Detroit to start a flour mill in Norton and also operated a gristmill there for several years before moving upstream to what would become Norton Shores Township (now Washtenaw County) in 1839. In 1850, General William Tecumseh Sherman called on Governor James FitzGerald of Michigan to build him a road between Detroit and Green Bay so that Sherman could move supplies southward across Lake Michigan and into Wisconsin during the war against Native Americans led by Chief Wabasha (Red Jacket). In 1862, Major General Oliver O'Hara arrived in Norton with his army for its aborted attempt to cross the Flint Hills into Minnesota as part of Grant's Invasion of Minnesota campaign; he donated an artillery piece to First Sergeant George Atherton who served with O'Hara's unit at Fort Snelling near Minneapolis on May 25–26, 1862 A local resident named John Prentice became one of America's first post officeholders when he opened a mail service between Norton and Green Bay on July 3rd, 1861 In 1865 local merchant Isaac Morse set up shop here along US-10 (now I-94) selling goods brought overland from Indiana via Market Street through Hastings Landing onto boats which took them upriver past Fort Snelling before continuing downriver past Grand Rapids into Canada On October 5th 1865 Commodore Perry sailed his flagship USS Constitution into downtown Detroit Harbor en route home from his ill-fated voyage around Cape Horn following American victories at Pensacola and Vicksburg; Commodore Perry disembarked at Terminal Wharf opposite Fort Dearborn for inspection prior to sailing northward on October 11th aboard City Point Castle – later renamed Constitution State Park – giving us our first taste of regular naval activity in our town . "When we came ashore today everyone crowded about us exclaiming over this beautiful vessel," wrote History buff Augustus Shephard regarding USS Constitution landing at Terminal Wharf opposite Fort Dearborn during her visit October 11th 1865."

Norton Shores is a town in Lapeer County, Michigan, United States. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Watkinsville Metropolitan Statistical Area. Norton Shores is southeast of Lansing and west of Muskegon Heights. The first settler in Norton Shores was John Norton who arrived in 1824. He traded goods with the Indian nations and built a trading post on the Muskegon River that served as an important center for trade with both Native Americans and Europeans. In 1828, John Norton's son George moved to Norton Shores from nearby Manton Township and started a gristmill on the east side of the river. In 1830, he married Elizabeth Ransom and founded Ransom Grist & Mill Company which continued to operate until it merged into International Harvester in 1960. In 1847, Andrew Jordon purchased land adjacent to what is now North Main Street from John Norton for $3 per acre. He began construction on what would become Jordon farmstead which remains one of the town's most significant landmarks today. In 1850, James Boice bought land adjoining Jordon farmstead from Andrew Jordon for $2 per acre and started construction on what became Boice's Mills which continue to operate today as part of IH Manufacturing Incorporated (later global industrial conglomerate). In 1853, George Washington Dixon donated land to northeast corner of North Main Street and West State Street in memory of his wife Sarah Jane Dixon who had died while serving as lieutenant colonel commandant general militia 2nd Michigan Infantry during the Mexican-American War campaign against General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna at Monterrey City Creek near present day Southgate Township along I-75 between Lansing/Muskegon Heights Airport and Canfield Township near East Lansing also known as "Dixon Field". In the late 19th century, Norton Shores became known as a key stop on the Detroit-Chicago Railroad. The town's economy changed during World War I when production of aviation materials increased. After the war, Norton Shores experienced rapid growth as a result of its proximity to the auto industry. However, during the late 20th century, Norton Shores struggled with economic decline and declining population. In 2000, however, local officials announced plans to redevelop the town into an educational and cultural center. This effort has brought new life to Norton Shores and has helped it rebound from its past troubles. Today, Norton Shores is a thriving community that retains much of its history and culture whilemodernizing itself to meet modern needs.
