Niles, Michigan is a small town located in the Eastern Michigan University campus area of Grand Rapids, Michigan. The population was 9,836 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskegon Heights Micropolitan Statistical Area. The name of Niles comes from nearby Niles Lake and Niles River. The first settler in what is now Niles was John Payne who arrived about 1800 and named his farm "Nile's Ferry". A post office called "Nile" was established in 1824, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1875. Most of what is now Niles dates back to 1898 when the Muskegon Heights Township platting commission created a township with a population of 5,000 people within its borders. At that time, much of northern Muskegon County lay within what are now Grand Rapids and Hollandtown areas. In 1907, when eastern Mio Township split off from Muskegon Heights Township to form their own town government, they re-named their newvtly formed township "Nile". The unincorporated community near where I-196 crosses the county line still bears this name (though it has since been renamed Sterling). “Muskegon Heights” became “Grand Rapids” on July 1st 1892 as part of a land deal between then-Municipal President James Gist and banker Augustus Fenton Leech; Gist had purchased 6500 acres east of downtown for $4 per acre ($102 million worth today) following his purchase from state treasurer George Whitehead one year earlier for $12 per acre ($248 million). By making this land giveaway – which included parcels totaling over 12 square miles (30 square kilometers), more than any other municipality during this period – Muskegon Heights demonstrated its power as an urban center while also fulfilling Gist’s desire to become financially self-reliant not only through farmland sales but also by establishing itself as an integral part of downtown Grand Rapids. In addition to becoming home to both City Hall – completed in 1915 following city officials' complaints about being treated like second-class citizens by their rural brethren – Gist declared downtown ‘the great section store [of] American cities’ because he believed Detroit would soon outgrow its market share there . . . In 1916 Gist outlawed saloons Downtown after Streetcar conductor Harry Lubin reported hearing men boasting that if they could just buy liquor from him without paying taxes he would let them go unchallenged on First Avenue between Dearborn Street and Third Street! After years of debate over how best to handle alcohol abuse among citizens (and firefighters) stationed Downtown at night due to Prohibition restrictions on drinking alcohol on public property[], Gisston finally ruled that all bars must close by 10 p.m., effective January 1st 1920[]. In 1881, an act of Congress changed the name to honor Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt III's donation of $10,000 to build a school and library here. The present day Stroud School building was built between 1886 and 1890 as part of this gift. In 1901, when Michigan became a state, Niles became its capital. The first state capitol building—the State House—was erected here between 1902 and 1904 by then-Governor John Englehardt with funds provided by millionaire industrialist Henry Ford Sr., one of Michigan's most significant political donors during that era. The current state capitol building (now known as the rotunda) was completed in 1972 after years of design work by architects firms led by Wayne McDermott & Associates and Schempp + Schmidt LLP.—a firm which also designed some notable other Michigan government buildings including Lansing Municipal Court Building (1966), Capitol Annex (1987), and Dearborn County Courthouse (1993). It should be noted that while both Old Capitol Building on Main Street west (which served as the first statehouse) and current State Capitol Complex were built with money from Englehardt—the latter being funded largely through sales tax revenues generated from auto manufacturing within its boundaries—the Rotunda itself received no such support from eitherengagement. This may have been because at that time all future major government construction within Michigan's borders would be funded primarily via general fund appropriations rather than through donations or individual contributions.—an early form of self-funding which would become more common over time.—although it should be noted that even today major governmental projects often receive funding only partially or not at all via general fund appropriations.—one reason why many Michiganders view their state government as unproductive if not altogether wasteful .
