Wayne County has grown steadily since its creation: In 1870, it had 684 residents; by 1910 it had 1,863 inhabitants; and by 2000 it had 4,035 residents (the latest figures are 5,898). today's population includes 713 people who were counted in 2010 while they still lived in their original homes within Niles City limits - making this one of America's fastest growing cities! Today’s downtown core dates back to around 1800 where three buildings remain: Holy Cross Church (built about 1800), Masonic Temple ( Built about 1830) and First National Bank Building (1890). Niles is a city in Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 2,912 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Washtenaw County. The name Niles comes from the Potawatomi wordNikisgeiwe (singular: nikisgei), meaning "west side" or "north side." The first Europeans to visit what is now Niles were French traders and fur traders in the late 16th century. In 1796, General Anthony Wayne founded Niles on the north bank of the River Rouge near its confluence with the Shiawassee River. In 1814, General John Crampton founded a small town here and named it after himself, Niles being one of his initial settlements in what would become Michigan Territory. A post office was established at Niles in 1835 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1855, an act authorizing township organization passed through Congress and created Washtenaw Township as part of Grand Rapids County; however, this ordinance did not take effect until April 1, 1856 because it had not been ratified by Grand Rapids County Board of Commissioners. On January 1, 1860 – three days after becoming statehood – Washtenaw Township became Niles Township when all but one corner of Oakland Township were transferred to it from Dearborn Heights Township. As part of a wave of township organizeings that swept across Michigan during this period there were many changes to namesakes throughout different townships so as not to be associated with specific counties or political subdivisions within those counties which might have interfered with economic development or other local interests.
