This handgun would later become known as the "Tommy Gun." The late 1970s saw a decline in crime rates throughout most of America due to many factors such as stricter gun control laws which made it difficult for criminals to get hold of firearms; however, this did not stop law enforcement officers from bringing guns into their departments from time-to-time. In 1997, Niles Township adopted a policy prohibiting officers from carrying any weapons within township limits unless specifically exempted by ordinance or regulation. This decision came after several shootings where officers had been shot at by suspects while performing their duties outside of township boundaries

Niles, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Washtenaw County. The population was 2,951 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. Niles was founded in 1837 by David Dixon and his family as an outpost on the Hastings River between what are now Dearborn Heights and Oakland Township. In 1839, Niles became a village with a post office and sawmill, two churches, and four stores. It had a population of 281 in 1850 but grew to 1,000 by 1860 when it amalgamated with nearby Highland Park to become one large town. The first school in Niles was built on State Street in 1837 by David Dixon. A second school was built on Woodward Avenue in 1840 by Drury & Sons grain merchants for students from Highland Park who could not afford to attend local schools. The first public library in Niles opened in 1880 within sight of the original post office building on Washington Street.. In 1865, Edward Payson Dodge bought 5 acres (20 hectares) east of downtown Niles from George Harsch for $5 per acre (2 per hectare). He dedicated this land to establish what would become Chrysler Automobiles LLC's main campus—today's Midtown Village—on which he constructed several buildings including its first factory building and its first showroom west of Grand Rapids.. Dodge also founded Western Reserve University which now occupies much of his former estate north of Midtown Village.. The industrial growth that characterized the early 20th century led to increased traffic congestion around downtown Niles; however, Mayor John Fenton persuaded Dodge to build a bypass road known today as I-96 connecting Downtown Detroit with Saginaw County through Midtown Village so that traffic could flow more easily around downtown streetscapes into suburban neighborhoods like Midtown Village where people worked rather than live close together on narrow streets (). This merger created one big city inside another big city ()–a model that has been replicated many times since then across North America.. On July 22nd 1927 – just over 50 years after he donated his land – John Dennison opened Ford's Rouge Plant #1 located just off I-96 south of Midtown Village near Brush Road (). Ford quickly moved production from Dearborn Heights upriver toward Wayne County because there were no other plants ready or willing to take advantage of Rouge’s larger capacity.. Niles was founded in 1836 by John Niles and his wife Anna. The town grew rapidly and by 1853, it had a population of over 100 people. In 1861, Niles became the capital of Michigan. The town prospered under the leadership of John Niles and his son-in-law, David Dixon. During the American Civil War, Niles served in the Union Army as an officer on General George Armstrong Custer's cavalry unit. After the war, Niles opened a flour mill and built a sawmill. He also developed a large farm area that yielded crops such as wheat, peas, cotton, potatoes and corn. In 1902, Niles donated land to establish Arborwood Park which is now home to several thousand people.
