Niles, Michigan is home to the world’s first gourmet coffee shop, The Grapes. opened in 1966 by two friends who were looking for a place to buy their own coffee. The shop became known for their high-quality beans and unique products. It was closed in 2002, but reopened as a cafe in 2009.
Niles is a city in the state of Michigan, United States. The population was 37,594 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Washtenaw County. The Niles district is one of four districts in the Grand Traverse City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now called Niles was first settled by fur traders and missionaries in 1796 as part of an effort to find a route to Lake Superior. In 1814, Niles became a town when it was platted as part of what would become Washtenaw County. By 1836, the population had increased to 100 families and it had its own courthouse and jail. In 1837, the town was designated as the site for Gratiot College which opened in fall 1837 under the auspices of Methodist Episcopal Church (now known as Grace Baptist Church). Gratiot College closed in 1860 due to budgetary reasons but reopened as Western Michigan University in 1870 with land from Gratiot College donated by attorney James Doolittlewood and brothers Lewis and Horace Wright. For many years WMI was also known as "Niles Technical Institute". In 1923, WMI merged with Detroit Tech School to become Wayne State University and then Wayne State University/Detroit Tech School in 1966 which became Wayne State University/ Detroit Mercy Hospital while still being classified by WSU/DMH as Wayne State/Detroit Tech Schools separate educational institutions. In 1990, all three schools were united into one university with same name: Wayne StateUniversity-Dearborn Heights (WSU-DH). On May 1, 2014, WSU-DH merged with USMILITARY INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (IST) to form National Defense University (NDU). In 1905 there were only seven small towns in Washtenaw County: Muskegon Heights; Southfield; Tecumseh; Harper Woods; Albion; Niles; Saginaw Heights; White Sands Beach In 1950 there were 24 small communities: Muskegon Heights; Southfield; Tecumseh ; Harper Woods ; Albion ; Niles ; Saginaw Heights ; White Sands Beach It has been said that what started out as simply providing goods for trade turned into a means for people from different parts of America to come together under one roof for education and commerce during this time period. This new found community spirit resulted not only from Fraternal Order Of Police Lodge No 9's establishment on Main Street back in 1865 but also from collaboration between local businesses owners who pooled their resources towards establishing schools such Asn'thera High School when it opened its doors on November 15th 1850 followed by North Eastern High school on December 3rd 1850 both operated out of buildings located at 307 Woodward Ave NW today home to Dearborn CommunityCollege & 4 other departments including Health Care Administration
Coffee has been around for centuries, and it is no wonder that its history is so rich. The first coffee beans were grown in Africa, and the flavor of coffee became popular in Europe after it was discovered by Portuguese traders. Coffee was then brought to Spain, where it was used as a fuel for their fires. The Dutch began trading with India in the 16th century, and they soon realized that coffee could be sold in large quantities. In 1596, the Dutch ship VOC discovered Java, and from this time on, Java became the center of world coffee trade. The Dutch also developed a process for roasting coffee that allowed them to produce high-quality coffees. In 1795, French explorer Nicolas-Jacques Conte explored Indonesia and found new coffee plantations there. He introduced French settlers to the drink and soon afterward began exporting Indonesian coffee to France. The first espresso machine appeared in Italy in 1818, but it wasn’t until 1870 that commercial espresso machines started appearing all over Europe. By 1890s, espresso machines had become extremely common throughout Europe. During World War II, roasted beans were rationed because of the war effort; however, people continued to enjoy roasted coffee even though it was difficult to find during wartime times. After World War II ended and demand for roasted beans increased again (due mainly to changes in world brewing methods), roast shops re-opened throughout Europe once again. Today there are many different types of roasted beans available on the market – including decaffeinated versions – which makes finding a perfect cup of Joe much easier than ever before!

Niles is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the Ottawa River. The population was 105,526 at the 2010 census, making it the 11th most populous city in Michigan. Niles is one of two cities in Wayne County and home to Wayne State University. The first European settler in what is now Niles was John Pickering who arrived from England on July 3, 1796 with his family and four others. He named his new land Northumberland Township after his homeland north of London. Other early settlers included John Goodrich (1799), Job Richardson (1801), Peter Maynard (1802), and James Pritchard (1803). In 1824, Methodist missionaries Isaac Webb and Elijah Hill founded First Baptist Church in what became Niles. With its inception as a village, Niles had three schools: Beaux Arts Female School opened in 1827; Bolton Male School opened in 1830; and Third Presbyterian Church opened on November 10, 1830 with Revs David Whitehead and George Sowers as pastors. In 1840, when Detroit was founded as the capital of Michigan Territory by Territorial Governor George Stephenson, Niles became part of that city's limits- giving it its current name of "Nile City". It wasn't until 1851 that the town got its own post office which continued to be known as "Nile" until 1958 when it changed its name to "Wayne". One contributing factor to the growth of Niles during this time were many shipyards that produced warships for both Great Britain and America during World War II. These include such famous names as Grumman Corporation’s Sparrowhawk yard which built USS Valley Forge (CV-2) and USS Enterprise (CV-5) between 1941-1945; Isuzu Shipbuilding Company’s Nagasaki yard which built HMS Ark Royal(RNLI) between 1944-1946; Bethlehem Steel’s Quincy plant which built USS Constitution(CV-12) between 1942-1948; Ford Motor Company’s Rouge plant where President Roosevelt toured during World War II for Operation Torch; all located along or near present day I‐64 corridor just south east of downtown Detroit across from Woodward Avenue/I‐75 junction By 1970 there were only a few hundred residents remaining within Downtown Nile while much nearer river waterfront areas rapidly developed into high density residential neighborhoods characterizing today's Midtown Detroit area including but not limited to: The Grosse Pointe Shores neighborhood just east off I‐696 next door to Renaissance Center/Henry Ford Hospital & other major employers like KPMG LLP., Foxconn Technology Group LLC., Lululemon Athletica Inc., Cadillac Fairview Park & more! historic buildings still standing right near old downtown nile center are : old brick courthouse building aka “the tower” at 710 Main Street Built c1900 by Judge Augustus Biddle ; Masonic Temple at 401 Woodward Ave [now home to Eastern Market] Started construction c1925 by architect Charles Fenton ; Bank Of America Building at 511 Main Street – First National Bank started operations here c1920 also anchored by several large department stores such as Sears Roebuck & Co., Macy's Department Store et al . . . .old bank building can still be seen across river from modern day One Campus Martius Shopping Mall dating back to 1925
