The history of the Niles, Michigan Army National Guard begins with the formation of the unit in 1917. This was a response to World War I, when Michigan was one of only 11 states to join the war. The military contribution made by the Niles Militia is difficult to overestimate. In total, more than 2,000 men from this unit served in World War I and II. Additionally, many other local units were also activated for service during these wars. After World War I ended, many soldiers returned home and joined their regular army units. However, there remained a small army reserve component in Niles County that continued to serve until 1971. In 1865, General John Fetterman built a flour mill here to processing local grains brought overland by stagecoach drivers. By 1870, Niles had a hotel and several stores. The town's growth declined after World War II until it regained some importance during the late 20th century as an agricultural center for nearby Midland Township. In 1951, Niles was chosen as the site of the world's first inter-city air-mail service between Detroit and Chicago (at that time still part of Illinois). Today, there are three airports within two miles of downtown Niles: Grand Rapids Regional Airport to the north (UA), Lansing Metropolitan Airport to the south (LAS), and Middletown Municipal Airport to the southwest (MDT). The Cass Corridor Railway Company served as one of America's leading transportation companies with its line running through downtown Niles from 1892 until its bankruptcy in 1923. With mainline rail service available only sporadically throughout much of Southeast Michigan during this time period, Cass Corridor officials decided to build a railroad bypassing downtown Niles instead; this decision allowed for significant redevelopment along what is now I-94 corridor proximate to Cass Corridor headquarters buildings today - including many new residential dwellings and commercial properties lining I-94 corridors adjacent to downtown businesses - making it one of largest such projects ever undertaken in Southeast Michigan history!
