The New Baltimore Navy Yard was founded on December 10, 1851 by Commodore John G. DeWitt as the first naval shipyard in Michigan. The yard became an important center for the navy during the Civil War and afterwards played a critical role in developing America's maritime capabilities. It produced ships such as CSS Savannah and CSS Alabama, and also built boats like USS Constitution and USS Perry. In 1915, the New Baltimore Naval Shipyard was sold to the United States Navy and became part of the Navy Yards at Norfolk, Virginia. From then until its closure in 1986, it processed more than 1 million warships and submarines through its construction process alone. Today, the New Baltimore Naval Shipyard is home to a variety of museums related to American naval history including the historic USS Constitution Museum (which tells the story of America's first national treasure), as well as Ships-in-the-Water: A History of Naval Aquaculture which illustrates how aquatic systems have been used by navies throughout history.

New Baltimore, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Oakland County. The population was 31,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. New Baltimore was founded in 1824 as a small community on the banks of the Ottawa River by John Gregg and his family after they left what is now Ottawa County, Kentucky to settle in what is now Oakland County, Michigan. In 1829, John Gregg's grandson Edgar discovered gold near present-day New Baltimore while prospecting for lead ore on nearby Otisco Hill. The discovery led to new business opportunities for Gregg and his associates and made NewBaltimore one of the leading center for gold mining in North America during its early years. In 1870, local entrepreneurs James Waddell and Augustus Kelley developed a water power plant that became known as Lake Shore Power Station (later renamed Bruce Energy Center). The company built other plants around this time including one at White Sands Arsenal that served as an artillery depot during World War I; another at Saginaw Bayou that serviced steamboats; and another at Midland Park adjacent to Midland Township which served as a summer home for wealthy residents and their families. These facilities helped create a strong economy within NewBaltimore during its early years but soon fell victim to technological advancements associated with electric power generation and transportation which led to mill closures throughout northwestern Michigan due to loss of jobs in those sectors over the next several decades until finally disappearing altogether by 1955 when electric mills closed all across western Michigan due to competition from automation courtesy of General Motors Corporation's introduction of automatic machineslaves/machinesheets into many auto factories across North America
New Baltimore was originally organized as a town in 1837. The first post office opened in 1838, and the first store was built in 1840. New Baltimore quickly became one of the most successful communities in Michigan. In 1853, the town voted to become a city and it did so on July 1,1854. The city's first mayor was J.E.Trowbridge and its first councillor was Wm.Hutton
