New Baltimore is a small town in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, located about 25 miles north of Detroit. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. New Baltimore is part of the Muskegon Heights-Warren Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now New Baltimore was John Linton, who arrived in 1812. He and his family were among the first to cross the Straits of Mackinac into Michigan Territory. In 1814, Lintonmarried Martha Barrow, daughter of Revolutionary War veteran John Barrow. In 1828, Nicholas Daugherty platted what would become New Baltimore on land that he had purchased from James McKay for $2 per acre (about $53 per km²). Daugherty named it after his friend and business associate General George Washington Patton during their military service together during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). Daugherty died in 1829; his widow married George Sutherlin and continued to live there until her death in 1865. Their son Nicholas Daugherty III inherited NewBaltimore and continued to operate it as a farmstead until 1970 when he sold it to David Bolesch for $1 million. Bolesch developed NewBaltimore into a resort town with several amusement parks, hotels, grocery stores, and other businesses. It became an important transportation center because it was accessible by road from Detroit and by rail from Grand Rapids. The town also attracted many immigrants over the years: Italians began arriving in large numbers during World War II; Poles started coming during the early 1960s; Hispanics came afterwards.
