Cotton prices plummeted during the American Civil War but subsequent demand revived helped keep most mills open through 1865; however only three remain extant today: John Nevin's mill (#2), Hansen's mill (#1) and Alldis' mill #3(?). In 1870 Alfred Hubbell established Aiken & Hubbell Electric Wire Company "(Aiken Hubbell Electric Co.)", one of the largest electric companies in America at that time ().hubbell also founded Ann Arbor Savings Bank which still exists today () .hubbell donated land to be used as headquarters for Michigan State University (), whichtoday stands on much of his original donation ().
