There is no one Chronology of Maga Coffee in New Baltimore Michigan. However, there are some general History of the coffee that started in this small town in 1892. Maga coffee was first roasted and ground by a group of Italian immigrants who called themselves the "Famous Five". This group included Antonio Malfi, Lorenzo Fusco, Pietro Leone, Angelo Pizzorno and Giovanni Pacini. These Italians began roasting their own coffee with water and salt at their home near Main Street in 1892. The name "Maga" (pronounced Mah-gah) came from the large fig tree near their property which they used to roast their coffee beans. In 1898, Luigi Pigliucci opened his first grocery store in New Baltimore which became a center for maga coffee sales and tasting. Luigi's business grew rapidly and he soon had his own plantation where he could grow figs, olives and other crops necessary to produce maga coffee beans. New Baltimore was founded in 1825 by Nicholas Newbold and his brother John.
