The New Baltimore Air Force Base gift history began with the donation of a plane by the General Electric Company in 1944. The base became operational in 1946 and was named after General James Webb, Jr., who served as Commandant of the Air Force during World War II. The gift of a jet fighter squadron to New Baltimore AFB was made in 1963 and has been an important part of the base's operations ever since. In 1994, the Base Realignment and Closure Commission recommended that New Baltimore AFB be closed, but it was saved by the Military Reserves who took over its management. The Base Realignment and Closure Commission also recommended that all military installations be consolidated into one location, but this recommendation was not followed.
New Baltimore is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 11,874 at the 2010 census, down from 12,028 at the 2000 census. New Baltimore is part of the Flint metropolitan area and is bordered by Flint to the north and east, Bay City to the south, Saginaw Township to the west and southeast, and Grand Rapids to the northwest. The origins of New Baltimore date back to 1835 when Saginaw Township was organized as part of what is now Bay City. In 1853, Bay City became a town in its own right and within Saginaw Township; this gave rise to what would become known as "New Baltimore." In 1884, New Baltimore merged with other towns in Ionia County - including Ecorse - creating what would become known as "New Ionia." In 1907, New Ionia was renamed after John Nolen Fenton III who had been an important figure in both it's creation and growth over time. Fenton served as Mayor of New Ionia from 1909-1912 and again from 1933-1939; he also served on many municipal boards throughout his career. He died on May 1st 1938 at age 95 years old (age 92 upon his death). He was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Grosse Pointe Park., MI

In 1949, President Harry Truman established a Joint Chiefs of Staff to lead the Air Force. The AF became operational on September 18th, 1948. On December 12th, 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower created the AF Command Structure which gave Air Force generals command over all other branches of service within the AF. In 1958, General Curtis LeMay activated what is known as Project Maven which aimed to create an air Superiority Forces (ASF) consisting exclusively of jet aircraft. On December 1st 1960, General Maxwell Taylor became Commander in Chief/Chiefof Staff for Aerospace Division and thus assumed overall responsibility for all AFB activities within USAF structures and functions within NORAD responsibilities.
New Baltimore, Michigan is a small city located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 8,521 at the 2000 census. The community was named for New York City Mayor John F. Kennedy who was born and raised in nearby Battle Creek. In 1898, the town had a population of only 111 people and it was not until 1952 that New Baltimore became an incorporated municipality. The history of New Baltimore began with two families who started a farm in 1879 on what is now Main Street. They were followed by others who bought and operated farms throughout the early years of the community’s existence before assuming ownership of their land and building homes. The first grocery store opened in 1912 and soon after became one of the most popular businesses in town because it offered a wide variety of products at reasonable prices to residents. In 1956, when Battle Creek merged into Grand Rapids, New Baltimore had become part of that city’s new government but still retained its own identity as an independent municipality with its own police department and fire department while also maintaining its own school system. However, due to population growth within Grand Rapids over time, NewBaltimore stopped being able to keep up with its larger neighbor and slowly lost ground in terms of economic development until finally becoming abandoned by residents in 1990 following a difficult recession which impacted all corners of Michigan. Today there are few traces remaining from what once was one OFMEX (Overseas Foreign Exchange) post office which closed down on September 15th 1978 after serving international customers through Fort Perry since 1966; however mail still arrives daily via USPS Priority Mail from Battle Creek facilities here at our main Post Office Building which is currently used as auxiliary space for the Grand Rapids Township Library branch Thank you for your interest!
In 1817, a group of entrepreneurs from the town of New Baltimore in what is now Michigan settled on a land grant and founded the city of Detroit. The original settlers were farmers and their families who arrived in small groups over several years. They named the new community after John Fenton, an Englishman who had organized a wagon train that journeyed across America in 1795. The first real development took place around 1825 when Detroit became the capital of Canada West. The city was quickly growing as businesses opened up and people began to move into the area. In 1840, Detroit's first school was built and it served as the only educational institution for all of Canada West until 1865 when schools were established in Toronto and Winnipeg. Detroit's rapid growth led to its own set of problems which included overcrowding, lack of infrastructure, tax avoidance by business owners and political corruption. However, through strong leadership, work ethic and determination, Detroit managed to overcome these challenges and continue to grow into the 21st century.
