Muskegon, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, on the western bank of the Muskegon River. The population was 87,827 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in what is now Muskegon County was David Wright in 1812. He named his land for his father, Moses Wright, who had come from England two years earlier as an American trader with John Jacob Astor's crew. There were some other early settlers such as Nathaniel Eaton and Jeremiah Mason who arrived before that but their settlements did not survive into present day Muskegon County. In 1824, George Stephenson built a canal across the river at Saginaw which made transportation much easier and allowed trade with Canada much closer than it had been before. This increased demand for goods brought overland by Native Americans led to increased settlement around this time in what is now Muskegon County including what is today downtown Muskegon and areas east of Indian Creek including South Bend and Lincoln Heights.. In 1840, township 1 was created out of part of Ottawa Township while township 2 comprised all but one block of modern-day downtown Muskegan which lay east of Indian Creek between Washtenaw Avenue NW and SW (now Woodward Avenue NW). On July 1, 1827, a bill was passed by Congress that designated Muskegon County as one of four counties in Michigan charged with developing roadways connecting Lake Superior with other parts of the state. This provided impetus for development inmuskegon county because it allowed entrepreneurs to bring businesses and residents closer together so they could trade goods and services face-to-face rather than having to travel long distance. In 1837, John Soller founded Soller & Son Brewery in downtown Muskegan which became one of the most successful breweries in America. The influx of immigrants during World War II helped increase population growth inmuskiegon county while also contributing to changes in social patterns that are now known as “the 50s Boom” period which coincided with growing affluence among middle class families across all racial/ethnic groups throughout western Michigan; primarily white collar professionals such as teachers or doctors who moved into newly developed areas along I-94A (now Midland Boulevard). By 1960, muskiegon’s population had reached over 300,000 people making it one of the largest Counties in Michigan outside Upper Peninsula County
