During World War I, he volunteered for service in France and was awarded the Croix de Guerre for his heroism during that conflict. The Muskegon Heights neighborhood in Muskegon Heights, Michigan was first settled in 1847 by Nicholas and Henrietta Wright. The Wrights were the first to clear land in this area, and they built a small cabin on their farmstead. By 1850, the Wrights had started a sawmill in the area, and they also began trading goods with other settlements in the region. In 1853, Nicholas Wright married Anna Maria Kapp of Beloit, Wisconsin. They moved their family to Muskegon Heights in 1858. There are several stories about what led to the Wrenches' decision to move to Muskegon Heights. One story suggests that Anna Maria's father had died when she was young, leaving her mother with three daughters to care for; AnnaMaria may have felt she needed a place where she could be close to her sisters. Another story suggests that Anna Maria's father had been killed during an operations at Fort Wayne during the American Civil War; as such, she decided that moving back home would be too difficult for his widow and children after living so long away from home. The Wrights may have wanted their children closer so they could help support them while they rebuild following dad's death. Regardless of why they choseMuskegon Heights as their new home base, it is evident that this small community grew quickly thanks to its founding families!
