The history of the shooter gift is a long one that has spanned many years. The first Shooter Gift was given in 1922 to Mr. and Mrs. George A. Godfrey, who were the proprietors of the Muskegon Heights Shoe store. From then until 1977, Shooter Gifts were given out as a Christmas present to individuals or families who had served in the military or police department. It wasn’t until 1978 when Shooter Gifts became an annual tradition at Muskegon Heights High School and it has since been passed down through the generations there. This year marks the 25th anniversary of our tradition at Muskegon Heights High School and we are excited to continue giving out Shooter Gifts as aChristmas present to those who have served our community faithfully over the years. Muskegon Heights is a small town in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskegon-Warren-Hancock Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Muskegon Heights were French explorers who landed there on September 26, 1724, and named it "Beaufort" in honor of Admiral la Bourgogne. In 1812, General James K. Polk's army passed through Muskegon Heights on their way westward during the War of 1812. In 1825, John Sibley occupied what is now Muskegon Heights and built a cabin here. He named it "Sibley's Grove". In 1830, Sylvanus Steele settled here and began to fence off his land from those around him. He named his tract of land "Muskegon Heights". In 1834, the Toronto and American Railroad came through town and began to transport goods from Canada to Detroit; as a result, businesses started to develop in Muskegon Heights. In 1840s-50s local physician Drury & Co., which became Aiken Drug Company in 1860 after merging with other drug companies (including Sterling Drug Company), grew up around town square near present day Griggs Road/King Street intersection At this time only one store existed: Drury's Drugs on King Street across from today's Walgreen’s Pharmacy building (founded 1865). However by 1870 there were four stores in business: two groceries stores operated by Haines Brothers Storekeepers Inc., both downtown at Griggs Road/King Street intersection; an dry goods store operated by Joeseph Fenton;and another druggist shop operating out of an old house on Woodward Avenue between Euclid Avenue east of current day State Route 231 north of Cass Ave.). That year also saw the opening of First National Bank at 123 Griggs Road/King Streets southwest corner with present day Second National Bank Building across Woodward Avenue just east of Griggs Rd./King Streets northeast corner where both banks are still located today!
