Maga Coffee became one of the most popular coffee businesses in Muskegon Heights during the 1920s and 1930s. Numerous customers from throughout the city came to purchase their morning cup of joe from Maga Coffee. In addition, manyMuskegon Heights residents enjoyed enjoying maga coffee while sitting outside on warm days or during cold winter months. In 1939, Mrs. Jorgenson passed away and her business was sold to her son-in-law, Harry Daugherty Sr., who renamed it “Daugherty's Coffee Shop” and continued to serve maga coffee until 1967 when he bought out his sister-in-law’s share in the business. That same year, Harry Daugherty Jr., along with his wife Maeve opened up their own maga coffee shop called “Daugherty's DELUXE COFFEE SHOP” on Grand River Avenue in Muskegon Heights. Muskegon Heights is a community located in Muskegon County, Michigan. The population was 9,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing–Saginaw-Bay City, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1892 by John "Tubby" Hargrave and his wife Mary Jane Hargrave as Muskegon Heights Farms. In 1907, the name was changed to Muskegon Heights after the town of Muskegon and its surrounding area became an incorporated village. The first mayor of the village was Fenton Biddle. In 1912, the village limits were increased to include what are now areas including Muskegonshire and Beech Grove east of Saginaw Avenue, and parts of Westland Township north of White Road (now US-131). In 1925, all but one block of Muskegon Heights were annexed by Lansing when that city became an official county seat. In 1940, during World War II, muskEGonHeights became home to Presidio Air Force Base which later housed Tactical Air Command's 3d Bombardment Wing from 1948 until its closure in 1991. In 1951, all but one block of Muskegon Heights were annexed by Saginaw when that city became an official county seat; however most residents still lived on their farms within Dearborn Township through much of this time (the exceptions being a few homes on Plymouth Road). According to the 2000 census there were 10 active churches in Muskegan Heights with 1 pastor; however these have since closed or retired or moved away due to changes in parishionership within Michigan's Catholic Church system over recent years which has led some people inmuskedonHeights consider themselves "independent". There are also several small businesses located throughout muskiegonshire heights such as a convenience store/gas station on White Road (now US-131) as well as two beauty salons/massages located on Dearborn Avenue between Plymouth Road and Birchwood Drive - both operated by women - providing services such as hair extensions and waxing among others.
