Muskegon Heights is a city in the Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 487 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing–Wawassee Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Muskegon Heights Historic District is a national historic district located in Muskegon Heights, Muskegon County. It includes 164 contributing buildings and 1 contributing site. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. Most of what is now Muskegon Heights was first settled by Native Americans in the 17th century, and early European settlers called it "Canton." The area that became Muskegon Heights was originally occupied by the Lenape tribe until they were moved to reservations near Detroit in 1837. In 1839, US president James K. Polk signed an executive order ordering all Native Americans living on Indian Reservations to leave their homes except for those living under military protection; this order led to a series of large-scale raids on Indian villages throughout Michigan by US troops during Polk's presidency. Most Lenape left before war broke out with Mexico in 1846, but some returned after hostilities ended and began settling aroundmuskegon heights as early as 1847. In 1870, George Wimer purchased land east of present-day Muskegon Heights from Joseph Daugherty for $10 per acre (4 km²). Muskegon Heights is a small town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids-Wyoming Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white person to live in Muskegon Heights was John Smeaton, who immigrated from England in 1827. He built a cabin on the edge of town and started trading goods with Indians and other settlers. In 1830, Smeaton married Mary Ann Cooke and they began to raise crops and process wood near their cabin. They also built a grocery store and two homes on First Street in Muskegon Heights. The village began to grow when other pioneers arrived in the area, beginning with Isaac Nevin in 1834 and Abram Howland that year. By 1840, there were six churches in Muskegon Heights - three Methodist (the original Methodists had moved from Battle Creek), one Lutheran (founded by German immigrants), one Presbyterian (established by Scotsmen), one Free Baptist (founded by Elijah Craig) - as well as five stores, twenty-four residences, seventeen barns/poultry houses and two water wheels used for powering wagons or mills. In 1847, Smeaton's son John Prentice bought land northwest of town from Abram Howland for $100 (). Prentice founded the city of Muskegon which grew up around his business interests within Muskegon Heights Village until it merged with Grand Rapids in 1998。 In 1861 however, Prentice sold all his holdings within Muskegon Heights Village to trustees Amos Adams Brownell (+ James Lillie + George Worthy) who then divided the land into twelve lots numbered 1-12th streets NW between Third Avenue SW and Fourth Avenue SW; these became known as "Muskegon Heights." musk
