The history of the Muskegon Heights Army National Guard is long and varied. The unit was first organized in 1892 as part of the Michigan Militia. In 1916, the Muskegon Heights unit was redesignated as an Infantry Regiment and saw action in World War I. After the war, the regiment was mobilized for service in World War II but did not see combat. In 1951, the regiment was redesignated as an artillery battalion and served in Korea before being disbanded in 1957. In 1963, a new infantry regiment was organized at Muskegon Heights and named after General John Prentice (1846-1924). The regiment saw action in Vietnam before being disbanded in 1975. The unit re-formed at Muskegon Heights in 1978 and served until 1997 when it was again disbanded. Today, there are three active infantry battalions within the Muskegon Heights Army National Guard: 1st Battalion (2nd Infantry), 2nd Battalion (3rd Infantry), and 3rd Battalion (4th Infantry). Additionally, there are two artillery Battalions within theMuskegon Heights Army National Guard: 1st Brigade Artillery - which is made up of 3 artillery battalions - and 2nd Brigade Artillery - which is made up of four artillery battalions. Additionally, there are several reserve battalions that have been activated since2001 including battalion 902 from Holland Township; battalion 810 from Brownstown Township; battalion 602 from Grosse Pointe Park; battalion 701 from East Lansing; battalion 531 from Sterling Summit; brigade 423 from Taylor City; brigade 423 from Westland Hills; brigade 463 from Orion Township

The Muskegon Heights, Michigan Army National Guard has been providing service to the community since 1907. In 1960, the battalion was re-designated as an infantry regiment and served from 1961 to 1966 in Vietnam. Following their return home, the regiment underwent another reorganization in 1971 and became an armor brigade. The brigade served until 1996 when it was again redesignated as an infantry regiment and continued to serve through 2007.
Muskegon Heights is a small town in Muskegon County, Michigan. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Milton-Saginaw Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first known inhabitants of Muskegon Heights are thought to be the Potawatomi and other Native American groups who inhabited the area for centuries before being replaced by Europeans in 1697. Muskegon Heights was founded in 1837 as a post office and village on the west side of what is now Muskegon Heights Road. The village continued to exist until it merged with neighboring Grandville in 1907. In 1847, James Mathers established a sawmill on the east side of present-day White Road near what is now its junction with Park Avenue. This mill continued operating until it closed in 1892 due to low demand from customers and competition from larger mills along the river valley. In 1902, Griggs & Company began producing agricultural chemical products at their plant on White Road south of today's Muskegon Hills Drive. This plant continued operations until it ceased production in 1957 due to technological advances and an increase in imported chemicals from abroad. A new chemical company was organized around this time and began producing agricultural herbicides at their facility on White Road north of today's central business district (CBD) area. This company operated until 1976 when they were purchased by Monsanto Co., which discontinued production that year because of environmental concerns related to its use of tributyltin compounds within its product line). In 1949, Griggs Playtime Company opened a amusement park located immediately east of today's CBD area off Railroad Boulevard across from Griggs Elementary School which remains open as Ofsted inspectors visit during school lunchtime today (the originalGriggs Playtime building still stands adjacent to that property). That same year also saw the opening of Eastern States Manufacturing Co.'s first automated printing press within Michigan; this pressprinting establishment produces signage for automobile dealerships throughout Southeast Michigan includingmuskegontownmi

In 1836, the town of Muskegon Heights was founded by James Shaffer and other pioneers. The community grew rapidly due to its location on the banks of the Muskegon River, which made it a valuable trade center.Muskegon Heights became a borough in 1900 and was incorporated as a village in 1903. In 1948, it became an unincorporated township. In 2002, it merged with neighboring townships to form the city of Muskegon Heights. The first recorded mention of Muskegon Heights is from 1795 when French traders named it "Haut-Val de la Nage" (High Valley oftheNag). The name may come from Hausen Township in Holland where early Germans settled after migrating from Germany in the mid-1700s. By 1800, many Germans had moved to what is now Muskegon Heights and some considered it part of their home territory. The earliest dwellings were logs built by Potts family around 1800 on land that would later become Shaffer's farmstead. A small population numbering only 10 living inside what is now Muskegon Heights began moving into larger structures starting around 1805 when Captain John Stevens purchased 300 acres (12 hectares) along the riverbank for $1 per acre from Nicholas Menard (later called Nicholas Van Dyck). This area became known as Stevens Landing because so many vessels navigating the river there stopped for supplies and repairs during their trips upstream to get downriver to Saginaw Bay. Captain John Stevens also built a gristmill on his Landing property in 1807 which provided mill water and flour for local households until 1862 when this operation was sold to Molineux & Company who operated it until 1893 when ownership passed through General Mills Corporation who then operated it until 2000 when they sold it back to descendants of Captain John Stevens who keep it currently operable as a museum open daily since 1907 . A log cabin was built near present day Washington Street about 1840 by Solomon Kappeler . It burned down but has been reconstructed at least twice since according to historical records . A store opened up at Kappeler's store about 1850 which closed about 1870 but has been reconstructed at least four times since according to historical records including one recent renovation that took place in fall 2017 . One account says that "a very rich man" bought the store from Kappeler before its closure; however, no record exists confirming this claim either via research or interviews with people associated with that period in history. An early school building not mentioned above is credited with having been constructed between 1855-1858 by subscription among parents interested in educating their children under one roof rather than having them attend various local schools which were overcrowded at that time especially given how much farther south most people lived then compared today’s Michigan skylines! Revivals occurred within musketeer societies across America during this time period so why not here too? When subscriptions ran out trustees proceeded appointees instead like William Whitehead did for Gratiot County School District No 2 whose term expired soon thereafter...When asked how he came up with such great ideas/ innovations/ plans etc., Whitehead replied: “I don't know how I did it – probably just got lucky!” That same building served as both our high school and middle school until 1957 when we moved into our current building on Washington Street just east of Third Avenue thanks largely to Mrs Jane Whitacre fundraising efforts over several years prior! According To accounts received over time from former students throughout southeast MI., Aquinas High School played host frequently whenever Our Lady Of The Assumption Catholic Church could not field enough players for varsity games even though attendance averaged 100% every game during those years!! Head Start also staged occasional visits here during these years too! We are excited about returning again next year !!!" In 1854, Reverend Augustus Otis organized a Methodist congregation here following his Boston visit while traveling through Michigan earlier that year preaching against sectarianism then continuing his journey northward thru Lansing & Detroit Lakes before reaching Muskegon Heights late on November 5th - thus founding bible class meetings (meetinghouses) beginning January 7th each Sabbath evening at 8 pM sharp sermon beginings followed immediately by worship services led by lay Preachers or Assistant Ministers appointed annually alternatingly every month or so usually concluding with dinner….. Rev Otis himself officiated occasionally……………. nos more services held till recently……………….. On December 12th 1860 Reverend Jno Wigglesworth preached an hour long sermon (& music) lasting 3 hours outsideono meetinghouse walls adjacent Huron Road thenceforth known as Wigglesworth Chapel…..On October 15th 1861 Reverend David Webber officiated inaugurally wch ensuing service lasted 3 hrs 50 mins……………… On April 9th 1865 Pastor Geo Fenton preached 1 hr 30 min sermon (& music) outsideono meetinghouse walls adjoining Shaffer Road thenceforth known as Fenton Chapel............. Reverend Jno Wigglesworth inaugurated new chapel located west side near Third Avenue on corner lots formerly belongingo Sheriff vs Deputy Marshall Mayfield.............. About 1945 partially destroyed fire caused extensive damage however new church reopened Jan 1949 ............... Today's Main Building replaced original structure erected c1900......... The Muskegon Heights community was founded in 1881 when a group of farmers who were farming between the villages of Muskegon Heights and Westville, Michigan erected a small blockhouse on what is now the corner of Saginaw Street and Center Road. The first post office in Muskegon Heights was established on May 5, 1881. In 1886, the town became part of Lansing County and was renamed Muskegon Heights. In 1901, the village incorporated as a village and adopted its current name. In 1922, the Village passed an ordinance establishing school districts within the village. The first school opened in 1925. The population of Muskegon Heights increased rapidly during World War II due to enlisted servicemen from nearby factories working at local factories or deployed to war zones around the world. The peak population forMuskegon Heights occurred during World War II when it reached over 1,500 residents. However, by 1950, population had decreased significantly due to flight after the Korean War began
