Mount Pleasant is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan and is the county seat of Wayne County. The population was 9,724 at the 2010 census. In 1850, Mount Pleasant had a population of 2,500 people and an agricultural economy dominated by raising corn and potatoes for export to Great Britain and other markets; however, during the late 19th century machine production took hold in Mountpleasant as farmers replaced hand labor with tractors and other machines. By 1920 Mountpleasant had reached its peak as an agricultural center with a population of 10,000 people but had begun to lose its industrial base as new companies began to form in nearby Grand Rapids or Detroit; however, during World War II there were heavy military preparations at Ft McNair which led to a boom in industry that has continued up until today

The community grew around the Mount Pleasant Academy, which opened in 1828 and became the first public school in Michigan. In 1840, Mount Pleasant incorporated as a town. Its growth slowed after the Panic of 1847 and its incorporation into Ashtabula County didn't gain momentum until 1860. After becoming part of Grand Rapids County in 1867, Mount Pleasant experienced rapid growth and development before declining again in the early 20th century. Today, it is a ghost town located within Ashtabula Township on Lake Superior
