Mount Pleasant is a city in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, United States. The population was 9,972 at the 2010 census. Mount Pleasant is the county seat of Livingston County. The city was founded in 1837 and incorporated as a town in 1851. It became a city on December 1, 1907. The first people to live in what is now Mount Pleasant were the Potawatomi Indians. They built their village near where it is today's downtown and hunted game there until white settlement came in the early 1800s. In 1837, John Stevens moved his family from Boston to what is now Mount Pleasant and began trading with the Potawatomi Indians. He named his new settlement after himself, Mount Pleasant Township (now part of Livingston County). By 1850, more settlers had arrived in what is now Mountpleasant Township and its surrounding area, so Stevens renamed it again – this time for all inhabitants of the township – Township of Mount Pleasant (now part of Livingston County). In 1907, when Detroit became an American city, Mtpleasant annexed portions of nearby Highland Park to become its second largest municipality by population after Detroit itself. At that time also houses WDIV-TV channel 4 first license holder which changed its call letters from KQED-TV Channel 8 to WDIV on September 3rd 1951

Mount Pleasant is a small town located in the upper Peninsula of Michigan. The community was laid out in 1837 by General John P. Mason and his wife, Rachel Pickford Mason. The name Mount Pleasant comes from the nearby mountain, Mount Pleasant Township, which was named for Mrs. Mason's father-in-law, Isaac Parsons. The first settlers to Mount Pleasant were farmers who arrived in 1837. By 1860, there were about forty residents in Mountpleasant Township and one hundred residents in the surrounding villages of Northville and East Lansing. After the Civil War ended, many soldiers returning from fighting found work as farmers and businessmen in Mtpleasant Township and Northville. In 1865, George Washington Carver moved to Mtpleasant Township with his family from Clawson County,Michigan. He became one of the early landowners in the area around present day Mount Pleasant and helped start several businesses including a grocery store, bakery, carriage factory, auto garage and cotton gin. Carver also donated land to become what is now State Fairgrounds Park on Hazel Street near his home in 1870. In 1907, King Edward VIII of England visited Mtpleasant while on vacation at Grand Rapids University and declared that Mount Pleasant was "the prettiest place he had ever seen." This led to increased development around the town because people wanted to see howEngland's reigning monarch would behave when visiting America's Upper Peninsula
The first white settler in Mount Pleasant was John Lyon, who arrived in 1837. He and his family were the first permanent residents of the township. The next year, two men, John C. Payne and Isaac Hull, erected a log cabin on what is now the northwest corner of School Road and Superior Avenue. In 1840, a school district was organized in Mount Pleasant and by 1850 there were ten pupils in the district. In 1861, Mount Pleasant Township became part of Michigan Territory 1 when that territory was created from portions of Upper Michigan. In 1875, three brothers--George W., Hiram H., and Alfred P.--granted 640 acres (251 hectares) to settle in what is now Mount Pleasant Township on land they had purchased from the government for $6 per acre. The grant included water rights which would later be used to create Eastern Lake. By 1888, over 1,000 people had settled in Mount Pleasant Township including 120 farmers and 130 mechanics who operated local stores and farms. Many of these early settlers are buried atMount Pleasant Cemetery which was founded in 1889.
