Mount Pleasant is a small town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,663 at the 2010 census. The Mount Pleasant Post Office has been in operation since 1892. The community began as a logging camp on the east bank of the Muskegon River, about upstream from present-day Mount Pleasant. In 1892, the post office was relocated to what is now downtown Mount Pleasant and became one of the first post offices in Michigan. The community's name derives from its location on a high point on Muskegon Bay that commanded a clear view of all around muskox country. This highpoint also served as an early trading post for local farmers and lumberjacks. Today, Mount Pleasant retains many of its historic buildings and businesses including: The Masonic Temple (1892), Goodrich Carpet & Home Co.(1912), Humble grocery store (1924), First National Bank (1920s-1970s), and Piggly Wiggly restaurant (1978). Many other businesses have moved into new or expanded locations over time such as Payless Tire Center and Early Childhood Development Center which opened in 2006 adjacent to Olde World Pizza across from Lake Superior State Park . Polk on villages with more than 500 residents. Dyson's nephew Henry Wurtz moved to Mount Pleasant from Holland around 1860 and became an important figure in early industry there; he built a flour mill that still stands today and operated it until 1900.
