The national guard in Mount Clemens, Michigan, is one of the oldest and most active National Guard units in the United States. The unit was organized on July 1, 1867, as a part of the Michigan Militia. The first commander of the Mount Clemens National Guard was Maj. Gen. George Armstrong Custer. The Mount Clemens National Guard has been called to duty numerous times during its history. In 1875-76, it served in the Mexican-American War as part of the 9th Infantry Regiment which fought at Buena Vista and Monterrey campaigns. From 1899-1920, it served with distinction during World War I as part of the 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team (3 IDC). It also fought in World War II as a member of Brigadier General John Pemberton’s 5th Infantry Division (5ID). Since its inception, the Mount Clemens National Guardsmen have played an important role in American society and culture. They provide security for government buildings and other critical infrastructure across the state of Michigan; participate in patriotic ceremonies such as Fourth Of July fireworks displays; provide support to local law enforcement; and serve as an important resource for military training purposes.

The Mount Clemens National Guard was founded on December 12, 1825. The unit was originally called the "1st Michigan Volunteer Infantry Regiment." On July 1, 1861, the regiment became part of the Union Army and was re-designated as the 8th Michigan Volunteer Infantry Regiment. On February 17, 1865, it was discharged from service in order to accept an offer from President Abraham Lincoln to become a state militia unit in Michigan. The regiment remained inactive for three years before reactivating on November 10, 1868. It remained active until it disbanded on January 3, 1895.
Mount Clemens is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Oakland County. The population was 9,644 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit-Dearborn-Oakland Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to sight Mount Clemens was French explorer Jacques Marquette in 1668 while exploring the upper Peninsula of Michigan. He named it "Clemens" after his native city, Clermont, France. The first permanent settler in Mount Clemens was Andrew Jackson in 1814 when he came from Tennessee as a refugee during the War for Independence. He built a cabin near present day downtown and called it "Jackson's Fort". In 1821, John Davenport founded what would become Lansingburgh on land east of modern Mount Clemens along with another settlement, East Lansing, which would grow into the city of Lansing today. In 1827, Henry Ford established an agricultural colony called Dearborn Heights on land that now forms much of downtown Dearborn Heights and north side of Woodward Avenue in what is now Mount Clemens Township (and still sometimes referred to as Dearborn Heights). Ford and his partners developed a large farm here that became one of America's leading food storage and distribution systems during World War II. This area also includes Ford's car factory adjacent to present day Gratiot Avenue between Woodward Avenue and I-75 exit 169A/Milepost Road southbound/exit 174 northbound). The town had its peak population around 1915 when over 10%of Xeonters lived here; however by 1930 only 2% remained living withintown limits while most residents moved away or changed their callings altogether due to economic depression brought on by World War II bombings raids by American bombers against Hiroshima and Nagasaki

The National Guard was originally organized in 1792 as an unarmed militia to support the American Revolution. The first national guard units were raised in 1794, and the first regiment was raised in 1798. The Guard was increased in size and number during the War of 1812, and by 1820 it amounted to over 26,000 men. In 1861, the Guard became a part of the Confederate Army under General Robert E. Lee, and then played a significant role in fighting against Union forces during the war. After the war ended, the Guard reverted back to its original size and function. The Guard has been used for various purposes since then including peacekeeping efforts, local security, and law enforcement.
Mount Clemens is a small community in the Northern Michigan town of Antrim. The community was founded in 1868 by Judge George Branch and his wife, Lucy. In 1880, the village had a population of seventy-seven people. Mount Clemens became a incorporated municipality in 1907. The name derives from an early settler, Augustus Clemens, who named the peak after his father-in-law. The first post office at Mount Clemens was established on July 1, 1868, with Elisha Thurston as the first postmaster. A store and hotel were built in 1870 and 1872 respectively; both closed during prohibition years. In 1897, the village hall was built and served as the main civic center for Mount Clemens until it burned down in 1922. During World War I, Mount Clemens played host to an American military air detachment commanded by Major General John J Pershing. A public works project began in 1923 that Shade Orchard Farmhouse School—the only school in the community—would be renovated and enlarged over time to become one of northern Michigan's largest schools (it would eventually be replaced by Antrim Elementary). The work also included new sidewalks and streetlights; part of this project still remains today as part of Highway 3 near Antrim Shopping Center. In 1941, during World War II, MountClemons allied with other townships throughout Battle Creek County to form United German Village #3 which functioned as a subunit of Detroit's Grosse Pointe Farms–Windsor area known collectively as "Thedetonation". Most residents left following Nazi Germany's annexation of Austria on March 29th 1939 but some continued to reside there until 1945 when they were all forced to leave due to war production quotas set by Army planners
The first European to visit the area now known as Mount Clemens was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. The name of the location comes from a Native American word meaning "hills of copper." In 1795, General Marquette, who was exploring the Michigan Territory, named the peak "Clemens" after Gen. Marquette's older brother, Louis-Pierre de Clermont-Tonkin.
