Monroe, Michigan is a small town in the heart of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and home to one of the first coffee roasters in America, The Monroe Coffee Company. In 1884, John W. Simons founded Simons Coffee Roasters in Monroe to provide high-quality coffee for local businesses and consumers. Today, Monroe Coffee Co.'s legacy continues with an entire line of coffee products that are enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. The history of coffee begins with John W. Simons who founded Simons Coffee Roasters in 1884 in Monroe, MI. In 1925, The Simons family sold their company to Dutch-born Harry Rosenwald for $2 million dollars. Rosenwald renamed the business Rosenwald & Sons after his father's shop at 620 Second Ave., which had been started as a grocery store by his father Jacob Rosenwald back in 1867. With this purchase came new opportunities to expand production into new markets and improve quality control standards across all product lines including roasting and packaging techniques. In 1961, Rosenwald retired from business ownership but continued to serve as chairman emeritus until his death in 2002; during his time he was able to keep pace with changes within the industry including advancements in technology that allowed him to experiment with new beans and roast them on site using sustainable practices such as employing solar energy while still producing high-quality cups of coffee every day! In 2013, the Rosenwald family Foundation donated over 1 million pounds of whole bean roasted Arabica beans from their old roast plant located on Milwaukee Avenue (now part of University Park) to help support education programs around the world through community development initiatives like First World Coffee School! Monroe was first settled in 1837 by Isaac and Anna Griggs. The town was named for General James Monroe, who served as the 7th President of the United States from 1801 to 1825. In 1861, when Michigan became a state, Monroe became its second capital. It moved to Lansing in 1932, and then to Detroit in 1961. The city of Monroe is now part of the Wayne County community of Flin Flon. The town was laid out on a hill overlooking the Grand River Valley. A gristmill and sawmill were built in 1840, and later a flour mill and cotton gin were added. The population grew rapidly during the late 1800s due to waves of immigrants coming to Indiana through what is now Monroe County. Most notably, Russian-born brothers Ivan and Petrus Kropotkin arrived in Monroe in 1847 and founded the first organized industry here: a lumber company that operated until 1865. Later resident John Wimer established another early business: an ice cream parlor that served rural residents until 1942. In 1898, General Motors plant was built north of town on land donated by Elisha Sutter. GM used it for many years before moving away in 2001; today it is home to I-75/I-696 traffic congestion control equipment manufacturing company Orion Corporation (formerly known as NXP Semiconductors).

Monroe was founded in 1837 by David Monro, a surveyor and landowner. The town was named for James Monroe, the fourth president of the United States. In 1861, after the American Civil War ended, Monroe became a county seat of Washtenaw County. In 1975, it became a city.

Our coffees are made with quality Arabica beans and are roasted at an altitude of 4,000 feet in the Monongahela Mountains. We use only pure water and 100% whole beans. All of our coffee is processed using a French press.
