Monroe is a city in the Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 21,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Holland Metropolitan Statistical Area. Monroe was first settled in 1837 by two brothers, John and Nicholas Lewis. The town was named for General Lafayette because of his visit to Monroe in 1839. Monroe was founded on October 24, 1837 by two brothers John and Nicholas Lewis as a trading post onthe east side of the St. Joseph River adjacent to what is now Harbor Springs Township. It was named after General Lafayette because he had visited Monroe in 1839 while on his way from Detroit to Springfield, Illinois. In 1840, when the Lewis Brothers ran out of money and could not build any more stores or homes, they Indiana Territory under leadership of Colonel John Prentice sold their land to Jeptha Gillett for $2 per acre (1/4 acre = $ ). In 1846 Anthony Lunsford bought over the Lewis Brothers’ shares and renamed it Monroe after President James Kieft who had helped them finance their trip from Stonington, Connecticut to become US citizens in that year. With only 11 residents living there in 1850 due to lack of industry or transportation opportunities within its borders – all but one being farmers – Monroe lost most if not all its developmental momentum until railroads arrived with inevitable economic impact beginning around 1900-1920s; however some older buildings still standing date back to this time period including Lunsford’s store built 1905-1910 which still stands today across from Main Street corner about halfway between Webster Road (now First Street) and Park Avenue (now Payne Ave.). The first school building was completed just south of Main Street corner in 1850; it served grades 1-6 until moved into new facilities north of School Street during 1909-1912 when another school building became available at that location also serving grades 1-6 until 1963 when it too burned down leaving only foundations remaining today as part of an agricultural property development known as “The Gillett Farmlands” located off Payne Ave., Republic Rd., Battle Creek Rd., Haggerty Rd., & Wabash Rte./East Side Dr.)Today this property forms much of downtown Monroe with many original street namesakes like Third Avenue North (Now Adams Drive), Jackson Boulevard East (Now State Route 16), Fifth Avenue Southwestern (Now Second Street), Madison Avenue Northeast/ old alleyway between Fourth & Fifth Streets called “The Alley” etc.; various businesses have since been established along these streets such as Verizon Wireless corporate headquarters since 2007 located on East Bank Drive across fromwhat used to be The Gillett Farmlands Development Corporation office space formerly occupied by Ford Motor Company prior thereto; extensive parkingLot west side facing School Street currently fills up every day with people coming/going daily several times throughout week especially during rush hours evening thru morning peak periods several hundred cars are parked there permanently plus overflow lot next door utilized for overflow purposes during high traffic seasons typically late night hrs or early morning hrs weekends etc.; numerous small retail stores dotning downtown area catering mostly towards functionals rather than luxury items although developers are considering redeveloping portions thereof into upscale neighborhoods having restaurants&bars inside major shopping centers type developments similar concept existing nearby in CenterCityDetroit&Dearborn Heights among others

Monroe is a small town in the southern Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The community was originally named after General Lafayette, and has been known as Monroe since 1834. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Monroe is located on the east side of the Keweenaw River, about 25 miles (41 km) south of downtown Detroit and 50 miles (80 km) northeast of Lansing. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.4 square mile (1.0 square kilometer), all land. The first settler in Monroe was George Ladd who built a log cabin in 1824. Other early settlers included John Cushman and his family from Canada in 1830, Ebenezer Morse from New York in 1835 and Wm Hickey from Ireland in 1840-1841. In 1834, Monroe became part of Washtenaw County when it was created from parts of Wayne and Shiawassee Counties. In 1870-71, Monroe's post office operated out of a cabin on state Road 9 near present day Wexford Township until it was moved to its current site along US Highway 12 just north of town on July 5th, 1971 On December 20th, 1907 local school board member Mrs J N Sowers donated land for a new school which would serve grade levels 1-6; this would be followed by grades 7-12 in 1912 when Lee Elementary School opened adjacent to Mrs Sowers' home East Main Street while Central High School served grades 7-12 until 1955 when it merged into nearby Granite Hills Elementary School then closed down due to lack enrollment however Central still stands as an historical landmark today across from Granite Hills Middle School . Many residents also helped contribute money towards building what is now DeltaPlex Stadium which hosted high school football games beginning with Pep Boys varsity game on September 10th 1961 before becoming Littlejohn Coliseum hosting high school girls volleyball for over 25 years including 14 years as the main stadium hosts men’s soccer games starting with their first match ever against Southgate Community College on October 6th 2003 . On November 3rd 2006 demolition began for what would become DeltaPlex Stadium project which would combine fieldTurf playing surface with 600 parking spaces eventually ending up taking 2 years and $40 million dollars less than original plan
