Monroe is a small town in the Macomb County, Michigan area. The population was 4,914 at the 2010 census. Monroe is located on US-27, about 12 miles west of Lansing and 27 miles east of Detroit. It is part of the Dearborn–Warren–Troy metropolitan area. The first known permanent settler in what is now Monroe was Nicholas de Mohawk, who arrived in 1795 from Canada. The town was platted as a village on July 1, 1802 by James Knoppers and his brothers John and Amos Knoppers. The name honor General Anthony Wayne (1777-1848), who fought against Native Americans in what is now Michigan Territory during the American Revolutionary War. The Township of Monroe was organized on December 14, 1824 by territorial governor George Washington Marcy. On January 1, 1830 it became a city when John Davenport named it after himself and another Livingston native, James Monroe (1758-1836). Davenport had been one of the founders of Jackson Heights on the northeastern side of Detroit as well as its first mayor. He served as mayor from 1820 to 1830 and again from 1840 to 1849; he also served as state treasurer from 1828 to 1830 and 1840 to 1850; he died while serving in that office. In 1860 Monroe became part of Macomb County when it was created out of parts of Ottawa County along with neighboring Sterling Heights and Midland City. In 1880 it reincorporated into Macomb County with a population then estimated at 2,500 residents – its current population Census report shows 4,914 residents living there at the 2010 census rate. Monroe has a rich history dating back more than 220 years which can be found throughout its public documents including local newspapers such as "The News" published weekly from 1861 through 1889; "Macomb Daily Gazette" starting publication date unknown but ending August 15th 1865; "The Herald" started publication date unknown but ending November 3rd 1889; "Lansing Free Press", started publication date unknown but ended May 5th 1865; all were published until their closure or merger into other papers around 1900s or later such as "Detroit Free Press".

He joined the Marine Corps after graduating from high school and underwent Basic Combat Training at Camp Lejeune before being commissioned as a second lieutenant on October 15th, 1998. He served as an infantry platoon commander with 3rd Battalion 4th Marines during Operation Neptune's Spear in 2003 before being promoted to first lieutenant on July 1st, 2006. In 2007 he was named commanding officer of 2nd Battalion 7th Marines based at Camp Pendleton California when it became part of Expeditionary UnitForward which later became Task Force Hammerhead under Rear Admiral Harry Harris Jr.. In January 2009 Clements was transferred to Naval Air Station Whidbey Island Washington where he served as commanding officer until his promotion to colonel on September 30th, 2010 effective February 18th 2011. From there he took command of 2/7 MAV Team Wing at Naval Air Station Iwakuni Japan until his retirement effective November 30th 2013 due to age 84 years old
Monroe, Michigan is a small town located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It has been a place where people have lived and worked for many years. Monroe was founded by James Monroe in 1824 and has been an important community ever since. The first store in Monroe was built on the corner of Livingston Avenue and Main Street. The town had a population of about 100 people when it was first established. In 1840, the town added land to its west side, which made it bigger and more populous than before. By 1850, Monroe had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1871, the town’s post office was moved from downtown to what is now its current location on State Road 141. The original courthouse in Monroe was replaced by the present courthouse in 1907. In 1939, the town built its own water tower to provide water for residents and businesses. The local paper mill closed down in 1984 but remains an important part of local history because it manufactured newspapers for many years beginning in 1911 until 1985.
