Monroe is a small city in the heart of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 12,719 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat for Monroe County and part of the Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1824, President James K. Polk visited Monroe while on his way to Detroit, and impressed by its location he named it after him. The first white settlers in what is now Monroe dates back to 1792 when John Beattie and Alexander Ross located a farming community on Muskegon River in what is now Monroe Township. The first school was founded in 1812 in what is now Maplewood Township. The post office opened at Monroe on December 5, 1824, under the name "New Monroeville". The original town site included present-day downtown as well as present-day neighborhoods such as Oak Park, Highland Park and Wellston Heights (now part of Clinton). By 1830, land had been bought from Native Americans for $25 per acre ($2 /acre) – an early form of township government – making it one of the largest townships west of the Allegheny Mountains. A new courthouse was built in 1830 within sight of downtown and served as court house until 1908; then it became a mental hospital which closed in 1964. In 1837, General Anthony Wayne founded Fort Dearborn near present-day Goodrich Road/Route 24 to protect traders travelling along Lake Superior from Native American raiders; Fort Dearborn morphed into Michigan’s first military district with headquarters at nearby Detroit by 1840. In 1861, during US Civil War efforts to protect Minnesota troops encamped at Brady Barracks on Mackinac Island against Confederate forces under General Robert E Lee (and later General Ulysses S Grant), Union soldiers burned down much of Brady Barracks before withdrawing across country; this event has been called “the grand finale”of the war for Michigan's east side because Brady Barracks was home to more than 1,000 Union soldiers who died or were captured.. In 1865 when First Lieutenant Nathaniel Lyon took command United States troops fighting Red Raiders around Cape Girardeau he ordered them not only not fire their cannons but also not march off battlefield so that any civilian casualties could be disguised as friendly fire: this order remains one of America's earliest cannon shots known to history! A major street renovation project began in 2006 that renovated all 22 blocks within 2 miles (3 km) periphery including businesses facing Main Street between Huron Avenue and Grandview Avenue; this made necessary changes to both business zoning laws and public infrastructuregrade streetscape design principles resulting in increased pedestrian flow through downtown with improved visual appeal while meeting LEED Silver certification criteria

The history of Monroe, Michigan is rich and intertwined with the culture and people of that community. The city was first settled in 1836 by the Detroit Land Company, which purchased land from the Miami tribe. The company constructed a town on the west side of the river to house its employees. The town grew rapidly, and by 1840 it had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1847, Monroe was incorporated as a village. It remained an agricultural community until after World War II when manufacturing began to take hold in the area. By 1970, Monroe had a population of just over 10,000 people and was considered an outer-ring suburb of Detroit. However, due to its location within commuting distance for jobs in Wayne County and its young age (the median age in Monroe was only 36 years old as of 2005), it has seen significant growth over the past few decades. Monroe’s rich history can be traced back to before European settlement there were any permanent residents at all. A group of Ottawa Indians known as “The Foxes” built their villages along present day Grand River Avenue in what is now Monroe Township on Decatur Creek in 1788-89 under guidance from Chief Pontiac himself. One account says that they named their village after General James Wilkinson who had helped them fight against British forces during the French and Indian War (1754-63). Afterward, many white settlers followed Wilkinson's lead into this part of Michigan Territory where he had acquired land east of Lake Erie for his new nation: The United States government granted him 640 acres near what is now Auburn Hills for his new township; however some sources claim that he received more than 1,000 acres because his original grant included land downriver from today's downtown Detroit including parts now located in Holland Township., There are several stories about how Grand River Avenue got its name; one story tells how local businessman Solomon Northrup donated $5 to help purchase water rights for nearby Village Park while others say Northrup simply liked what he saw when driving through the area on horseback and called it "Grand River Avenue" because that's all he could see flowing past him (north) on both sides! In any case Northrup donated enough money so that Village Road could be paved - thus making it possible for locals to get around without having to go out into traffic! Another version claims that soon after moving into his newly founded township Northrup started hearing rumors about something strange happening downstream at what is today Dutch Run Park; so rather than wait until everyone else did too - he decided to investigate himself!Dutch Run Park would later become home to one of America's first shopping malls - M&M's Place! It wasn't long before businesses started popping up throughout Monroetown – but despite being quite small at first nothing came easy for these early entrepreneurs… not even getting permits or getting zoning permission! To get started they often rented space from other businesses who already had their own buildings/land set up etc.; but eventually things began moving faster than they could react which led some businesses owners directly into conflict with their neighbors – sometimes going so far as violence!!! One such incident took place when two businessmen reported someone smashing windows at another business next door; ensuing riots ensued which ended with both men receiving jail time!! But overall most incidents seem to have been pretty much behind closed doors – though there are still some telltale remnants OF those days like evidence remaining from when police used TO raid another business…..or even when construction workers went ahead & dug deep underneath a streetlight killing a possum????? NeedlessTo say……….these days things are much more civilized thank goodness!!!!!!!!!
