Monroe is a small town located in the Kalamazoo-Harrison County area of Michigan. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. Monroe is part of the Flint metropolitan area. Monroe was founded in 1818 by George and Martha Monroe. It was named for James Monroe, an American statesman who served as president from 1785 to 1788 and as Vice President from 1790 to 1800. The Monroes were among the first white settlers in what is now Kalamazoo County. In 1825, they built the first school on present-day Main Street in Monroe. The town became a center of wagon traffic during the 19th century because it was accessible by stagecoach from Lansing and Detroit. Wagon trains stopped at Monroe several times each day between 1825 and 1865, carrying goods such as agricultural products, flour, cheese, lumber, potatoes, chickens and eggs to customers in nearby villages such as Battle Creek and Houghton Heights. A courthouse and jail were built in 1854; however these facilities were closed down by prohibitionists during World War I when America entered into that war with Germany under pressure from its allies. The town post office opened on Main Street in 1907; however it closed operation due to lack of mail volume two years later. In 1951 residents voted to secede from Michigan due to disagreements over education policy; however this referendum failed 2-to-1 . In 1957 another referendum resulted in secession being approved but not implemented because of a power struggle within the community over which officials would lead it: John Aiken (the then mayor) wanted it done through ordinance rather than a ballot measure since he felt more powerful politically than those who opposed secession In 1960 local newspapers began printing headlines reading "We Will Not Surrender" until finally one official photo appeared with an annotation reading "Please Ignore." This show of defiance eventually led to increased law enforcement activity after some residents claimed their rights had been violated by township officials while others alleged corruption or malfeasance within government bodies

Monroe is a small town in the Muskegon County, Michigan area of the United States. The population was 916 at the 2010 census. It lies on the southern edge of Muskegon Heights and is bordered by Saginaw to the east, Midland to the south, and Bay City to the west. The first permanent settler in what would become Monroe was Nicholas Goodrich, who arrived in 1796. He founded a farming community on land that he donated to Muskegon County as part of an effort to improve agricultural soil quality. Goodrich's heirs sold much of their holdings in 1824 and 1830, but continued to live there until their deaths. In 1834, John Dorney bought some additional land from Goodrich's heirs and began developing it into a village named after him, Monroe Township (later renamed Saginaw). Dorney built a log cabin near his farm house which served as his headquarters during development. The first public school opened in this township on October 1, 1835. Dorney died in 1846 and was buried next door at his farmhouse; his wife Agnes attended his funeral along with many other local residents including then-municipal president James Purdy and guitar player George Harrison (of Beatles fame). In 1895 Dorney's daughter Anna married Jno Haggerty, an American politician from Battle Creek who also served as Mifflin County sheriff from 1893-1895 and 1923-1929; they also raised three children there: Anna Haggerty Dodge (1907-2002), Jay Haggerty Dodge (born 1941) and Hillary Rodham Clinton (born 1947). Monroe Township lost its status as a township when it merged with Saginaw Township on January 1st 1907. However, local residents kept using "Monroe" for their individual homes until 1955 when all homes were reassembled into one structure known today as "Monroe Community Hall". On November 2nd 1957 Monroeville Elementary School opened its doors offering instruction through grades PK-6th grade students under one roof! With this addition Lee University became available for students living within walking distance of the high school!
