Rees bought the Herrington Coffee Estate and began to roast coffee onsite. By 1947, John A. Midland, Michigan is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 7,895 at the 2010 census. Midland is located on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and bordered by Huron County to the south and east, Lapeer County to the north, and Grand Traverse County to the northwest. The town was named for General James K. Polk in 1847 as part of a land deal with Ottawa Indian Nation leader Joseph Brant. The first permanent settler in what would become Midland was John Meigs in 1837. He purchased 640 acres (220 hectares) from Ottawa Indian Nation leader Joseph Brant for $5 per acre ($2,500/km²). Meigs built a log cabin and started grow crops that he sold to others in his area until he lost his farm property during the Panic of 1857. In 1847, General James K. Polk bought 4 square miles (10 km²), or about one-tenth of what would later become Midland, from Ottawa Indian Nation leader Joseph Brant for $10 per acre ($4,000/km²). As part of this land purchase, General Polk gave instructions that Midland be named after him – specifically for his role leading American forces during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). One early resident of Midland was David Levy who arrived there in 1849 with his family from Davenport, Iowa. A year later,Levy married into a local family and moved their home into what became known as "the Levy House". David Levy's descendants still live there today along with many other descendants who have ancestral homes elsewhere on the Upper Peninsula including Battle Creek Township near Sault Ste Marie and Lacrosse Township near Hollandtown Heights. The town began expanding rapidly following its incorporation on November 3rd 1860 by an act of Congress under territorial law entitled "An Act To organize Territory Of Michigania", which provided for township suffrage within congressional districts; however due to lack of population growth rate throughout Territorial America resulting from waves of emigration during those years all but three townships were organized before 1830 it seems likely only one midwestern township got organized — Berrien — probably because berrien had been unorganized since 1800 when it coincides with territory created out west by Northwest Ordinance No 1
