The Navy has a long and proud history in Midland, Michigan. The city’s navy was started in 1909 by Captain J.D. Scudder, who organized the local chapter of the American Red Cross to provide supplies for naval ships on their way to World War I. In 1925, Midland became the first municipality in Michigan to authorize a municipal navy with its own budget and personnel. In 1941, Rear Admiral Harry L. Fletcher assumed command of the Midland naval base after Vice Admiral James Mabus resigned from his post as Commander-in-Chief U.S forces Pacific Fleet due to health issues. The Naval Air Station Midland ( NASM ) was opened in 1946 and served as home port for aircraft from all three services during World War II . NASM also played an important role in providing air defense for both Midland and Dearborn County during the war years . After the war, NASM underwent a major renovation that included new Hangar 1 , which served as Headquarters Squadron (HS) until its decommissioning in 1970 . NASM also reopened itserk hangar which had been closed since 1949 while undergoing repairs .. It is now used as office space forMidland City Hall Once again, following WWII , NASM underwent extensive renovations which began in 1951 including additions to Hangar 2A which housed Helicopter Center Squadron (HCS) until its disbandment in 1966 Additionally, new Terminal Buildings were constructed - including Hangar 3A which served as Aircraft Maintenance Facility until it decommissioned in 1984 Finally, Terminal buildings were completely remodeled into their current form - including addition of Pier 1 which houses Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) squadron activity area prior to its conversion into Naval HS detachment on October 8th 1990 Since then, NASM has undergone several expansions and updates - most notably installation of replacement power generators & controls within hangars 2B & 3B back when those structures were still operational .. In 2016-17 , work commenced on adding a large hangar – designated Hangar 4 – replacing older structure at nearby US Customs & Border Protection building .. This will add more than 350 additional sq ft warehouse capacity making NASM one of the largest commercial fleets provider across North America .. As part of this project Top Gun Support Grouprons were relocated from MCRD squadron property adjacent to Hanger 4 toNASM's newly renovated Pier 1

Midland, Michigan is a city located in the western lower Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 2,814 as of the 2010 census. Midland is bordered by Saginaw to the east and east-northeast, Grand Rapids to the north, and Holland to the northwest. It lies on both sides of the Mackinac River, which forms its eastern border. The first known inhabitants of what is now Midland were two groups of Calumet cultures people who erected small villages near what is now downtown Midland in about 1800 BC. The Mississippian culture built large fortified cities such as Keweenaw Bay and Ottawa County in what are now Detroit and Flint, respectively (Ottawa County was abandoned after European contact). The Potawatomi occupied central Michigan from approximately 1650 until 1815 AD when they vanished following a Beaver Wars campaign against their Canadian neighbors. The area that would become Midland was first settled by farmers in the early 1800s. On December 12, 1837, John Sibley patented land that would later form part of Midland Township (now Muskegon Heights Borough). In 1844 Captain James Hensley founded an independent company called "Hensley's Western Ohio Land Company" to purchase large tracts of land east of Muskegon Heights for settlement by white Americans. By 1850 there were over 250 settlers living in Midland Township alone; this number had grown to 1,000 by 1870. The town center grew slowly during the first half of the 19th century due largely to lack of transportation available or access to water resources necessary for growth. However, with construction on several roads starting around 1900 and progress toward municipal services beginning in 1923, growth accelerated throughout Much Ado About Nothing period through Late 19th century vernacular architecture characterized various parts including commercial buildings centered along Main Street (then US-24), civic center complex on Woodward Avenue between Third Street and Fourth Street/Herschel Road (now Harrison Road), schools across Woodward Avenue between Second Street and Seventh Street/Fayette Road (now Maplewood Drive), churches on East Main Street south of Third Street/Greene Boulevard between SixthStreetand EighthStreet/Highway 146 (now Ionia Boulevard) – all contributing factors leading up until present day redevelopment along Interstate 94 corridor
