The first permanent settler in what is now Midland was Nicholas Grosse in 1837. Grosse founded the village of Greenville on the banks of the Saginaw River. The town began to grow rapidly after it became an unincorporated community in 1851 and was incorporated as a city by an act of the Michigan Legislature on July 1, 1857. The city had a population of 381 when it lost its charter in 1961 but reached its present size by 1990 with a population of 6,924. Midland has been called "the cultural capital of Michigan." It is home to many museums and galleries including the Detroit Institute of Arts, Wayne State University's Museum of Art, and Grand Rapids' Mackinac Center for Music and Artifacts. In 1837, a group of farmers in Midland founded the first store in what is now the city of Detroit. In 1850, the first train to come through Midland stopped at the tracks near the current intersection of Woodward and Gratiot. The town was home to many businesses including Ford Motor Company, Chrysler Corporation, and American Can Company before they moved away to larger towns in central Michigan during the Great Depression.
