The first permanent European settlement in what is now Midland was a trading post by French traders on Green Bay Lake in 1796. The early town site was east of present day Midland on what is now Washtenaw County Road No. 4B. By 1800, a village had started to form around an inn that became known as "The Horseshoe" because of its location near the Shoe Bridge over Big Kettle Creek on which travelers crossed from Shiawassee Township into Washtenaw County for trade with Indians along the Huron River bed (the Horseshoe Inn still stands today). In 1818, General Mariano Diaz established Fort Detroit, which served as Mexico's winter outpost on Mackinac Island during their invasion of Upper Great Lakes territory; when war broke out with Mexico, he abandoned Fort Detroit and ordered his men to build another fort nearby at Petoskey Peninsula southwest of present day Midland. In 1825, James Purdy founded Joplinville as a small community northeast of present day Midland on area that later became part of downtown Joplin City Limits; Purdy built a cabin there and named it after himself. A year later, he arrived with his family at what would become Joplin City Limits; they soon began trading goods with local farmers and aboriginal peoples who dwelled in or nearpresent-day Joplin Township and Ottawa County. Midland is a town in Hillsdale County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing–East Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first known inhabitants of what is now Midland were two groups of Chippewa Indians who settled near what is now Ionia Township in 1812 and 1813. In 1837, the first post office in Hillsdale County was established at Midland by George Stephenson with mail from Detroit. The town's name derived from a General David Dixon place called "Midland" on East Side Road (later M-I-D-L-A), about west of present day Midland Village. In 1862, when US Congressman John Pemberton organized the Second Michigan Territory, he mineralized some land east of Grand Haven that became Midland Township and village boundaries were set at its eastern edge. A sawmill and gristmill operated in Midland until 1958. By 1870 there were 120 houses and 2 churches in what is now Midland Village; by 1880 there were 400 houses and 5 churches with a population of 3,000 people living within its limits including an unincorporated area to the north which later became Dearborn Heights . In 1915, during World War I, production for Henry Ford's new Model T began in Midland as did other wartime industries such as munitions manufacturing and aircraft assembly plants; however due to strategic bombing raids against Detroit during that war all these plants ceased operations within a few months after Pearl Harbor . 1) After WWII ended local residents voted to be annexed into Wayne County because they wanted more services available than they could get from neighboring Hillsdale County – this vote led to their current location
