The Coast Guard Gift History Museum in Midland, Michigan has a rich and colorful history of coastal guard gifts. The museum is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. It was founded in 1949 by Captain John Kapp with the goal of preserving Coast Guard artifacts and memorabilia from being lost or destroyed during World War II and the Korean War. Captain Kapp collected many items from various ports around the United States as part of his duties as a coast guard officer, including several pieces of artillery equipment, a lifeboat engine, firearms, clothing, food supplies and more. Many of these items were donated to the museum by citizens or businesses who were interested in helping preserve Coast Guard culture and history for future generations. Today, the museum offers visitors an impressive collection of coast guard gifts that span nearly 50 years! This includes items such as lifeboats (including some delivered directly to Midland), boats (both recreational and commercial), uniforms, tools, books on sea duty and more! Some of the most interesting gift items include an original Golden Globe Awards keychain that belonged to actor Robert Downey Jr., a signed copy of "Cannonball Run" written by Ernest Hemingway and two sets of authentic-looking starshells that once graced an old battleship in Midland Harbor!

There were few permanent settlements until after World War II when industry began to grow in nearby Detroit while farmlands near Midland were developed for housing developments and other uses such as industrial land reclamation project Fenton HillsState Park).
