Marquette is a city in the Midwestern United States, located on the north shore of Lake Michigan. The population was 7,362 at the 2010 census. It is the home to Northwestern Michigan University and Marquette football team. The area that would become Marquette was first inhabited by the Potawatomi people. After months of exploration and reconnaissance, General James K. Polk's Expedition discovered what would become Marquette in 1824 while raiding an Indian village on the northern edge of today's Milwaukee County. At that time, only 8 miles wide and 10 miles long, it was one of the largest settlements in North America; its original name may have been Wabash or Maytown (now part of Milwaukee). In 1836, when Illinois became a state, Marquette became its second city after as part of territorial boundaries it included all present-day Wisconsin except for Racine and Elkhart [in present-day Indiana]. The city became an important center for education with eight public schools being established within 2 years: three elementary schools (Marquette Male Academy/Secondary School; Sangamon Female Academy/Secondary School), two high schools (Marquettes Seminary Institute/University College), and one university school which opened in 1840 as Western Reserve University—later Cleveland State Normal School before becoming Case Western Reserve University in 1902. In 1847–1848 Father John Faust committed suicide at age 54 after serving numerous terms as pastor at St Joseph Cathedral Parish then living on Washington Street just east of downtown Marquette until his death from natural causes at age 80 near his home on Green Street less than 1 mile from today's Old Main Quadrangle building on State Street across from Yeshiva Torah Congregation where he had also served many terms as rabbi since 1892; this event is commemorated annually by a mass said at Marciennes Cathedral across from Notre Dame de la Garde Cemetery (formerly called Our Lady Help Of Christians) during Easter week which includes readings from Faust's comprehensive life story including Q&A Session with Rabbi Meir Kahane prior to services. On July 14, 1850, when Minnesota entered into union with America through a process known as congressional annexation,[1] both Wisconsin Territory[2] and Iowa Territory[3][4] were divided between Minnesota Territory[5][6] and Nebraska Territory[7], much like modern day Kansas and Oklahoma Territories do today.[8][9][10] AsMinnesota Territory did not include parts of what are now north-central Illinois,[11] native land within that territory never came into contact with white settlers other than occasional visitations by traders hunting game along the upper Great Lakes region now occupied by Michigan and Ontario provinces.. In 1861–1862 Territorial Governor David Ritchie convened a special session to resolve certain issues about Nebraska Territory which included adding unincorporated areas located east of Omaha City Limits southward to make up for lost land granted to Iowa Territorial residents eastward.[12][13][14][/15][/16][/17][/18][/19][/20][/21],[22],[23],[24], among these new residents were men such as Elisha Pease who arrived in 1861 followed two years later by George Stephenson who landed in 1865 via steamboat upon hearing rumors that gold was buried somewhere near Dodge City Creek; Stephenson soon founded Northern Pacific Railway Company whose headquarters still stand within easy walking distance today of northwest corner Kedzie Avenue & Hawthorne Boulevard.
