Marquette is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Oakland County. The population was 927 at the 2010 census, making it the second most populous city in Oakland County after Detroit. It is also one of four cities that make up the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor. The first Europeans to visit what is now Marquette were French fur traders who arrived in 1614, looking for a route to Asia. They named their new discovery "Island de la Motte" because they found evidence that a group of Indian warriors had been there earlier that year. In 1647, Jesuit missionaries from France established a mission on an island near present-day downtown Marquette, which became known as Notre Dame du Portage (now called Holy Cross Cathedral). In 1812, when Michigan was organized as a state, Marquette became its capital; however, it lost its status as the state's capital when Lansing was moved to Auburn Hills in 1907. In 1819, artillery batteries belonging to General Anthony Wayne's army were stationed at Fort Dearborn on the north side of town before being relocated to Fort Mackinac on Mackinac Island during the War of 1812.
