Marquette is a city in the Kalamazoo District of Michigan, United States. The population was 34,619 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kalamazoo County. The first European settler in what is now Marquette was Nicholas de Soto, who arrived on July 24, 1795 and named it after himself, Manuel de Marquette. De Soto's group of Spanish missionaries reached what is now Marquette on August 15, 1796 from Ionia County in central Michigan. In 1804, John Fenton bought land east of present-day downtown Marquette for $2 per acre from the Ottawa River party of French Canadians during the opening days of the Gadsden Purchase Period. Fenton developed his land into a town called "Fenway" which he named after General Washington's army commander James Fenimore Cooper's home state (New York). In 1835, when Detroit became an incorporated city and its boundaries were redefined by act of Congress as part of that community's merger with Wayne County to form today's Michigan Territory, Fenway was transferred to Detroit as part of that community's sectional consolidation with other township communities in Wayne County according to provisions made by Act 2nd Mariana Tract No. 3 (1836). The village began emerging around this time as one possibility for incorporation within Detroit but no action was taken because there appeared to be little consensus about its merits among those interested in forming a village or township within that large metropolitan area. Eventually two committees were formed - one composed entirely of residents living along Huron Street between Dearborn Avenue and Woodward Avenue; and another composed entirelyof residents living along Woodward Avenue between State Street and Gratiot Avenue - both Committees recommended incorporation without recommending any particular Village name or site for incorporation When Ford Motor Company purchased most if not all portions including the Dearborn Avenue corridor from The federal government for $675 million in 1948—the only way Mayor George Romney could become re-elected —he decided upon naming Chevy Chase as "Chevrolet City" because it represented his hope that Chevrolets would once again fill many high-quality jobs available throughout downtown Detroit following World War II shortages caused by Allied bombing raids over southern Russia…. Chevrolet City never materialized but instead became known as Downers Grove Township near Ann Arbor…. Later still some members felt Chevrolet City should have been called something other than "Detroit." That led to efforts by then-Mayor Romney to get legislation passed naming a new Village after him – ultimately successful - designation becoming "Romneyville." With few exceptions most suburban areas located north and west of downtown have since replacedVillage names with their more contemporary equivalents such as Royal Oak Township ( northwest side), Farmington Hills Township ( northeast side), Clinton Township ( southeast side), Troy Park Borough ( southwest side) etc., though various villages continue to exist such as Harbor Beach Borough on Lake Superior just outside Of Battle Creek
In 1837, the first steamboat ever chartered from Marquette arrived in the city. The boat was called the "Herald," and it transported passengers and goods between Detroit and Marquette. The first post office in Marquette was established in 1839. It was called the "Marquette Post Office." In 1861, a railroad was built through Marquette by entrepreneurs John W. Holland and James Fenton. The new railroad allowed for more commerce to be conducted in the city. In 1870, a fire destroyed most of downtown Marquette. But soon after, construction began on what is now known as Central Park. This park served as an important community center until it was razed in 1942 due to World War II bombing raids.
