Madison Heights, Michigan is a town in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 5,876 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing–East Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. The site of Madison Heights was first settled by Germans in 1836 and became a village in 1871. In 1896, it became a townsite when the railroad arrived. The current community was erected on land that had been donated by Colonel John Davenport and his wife Esther Davenport in 1907. A post office called Madison Heights was established in 1836, and remained in operation until 1906. The first settler to arrive in what is now Madison Heights was Johann Gottlieb Grosse from Germany. He bought land east of Lansing and built a cabin there on July 7, 1836. Three days later he sold his cabin to Captain Peter Kappenheimer for $600 cash plus 10 acres (4 ha). Captain Kappenheimer named the settlement "New Amsterdam." By 1840, over 20 German families lived here with about 125 residents total. In 1871, the village of Madison Heights merged with the town of East Lansing to form what is now Lansing–East Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area (). At its peak population size in 1916 it had 2,500 residents; however this number decreased gradually through the years due to technological advances which led to an increased number of jobs outside of centralMichigan while people living within city limits transitioned into suburbia or rural areas outside of town boundaries]. A new school opened on November 1st 1915 which served students from East Lansing as well as parts of neighboring villages including Southfield and Stroudsburg Township (). Madison Heights is a city in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 9,693 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metro area. The first permanent settler in what would become Madison Heights was James Hickey in 1817. He and his wife, Deborah, located a log cabin on the banks of the Muskegon River on their farm known as "Hickey's Grove." The Hickeys were pioneers in this area and are considered to be the first white family to live permanently in what would become Madison Heights. In 1826, John Sibley founded Sibley's Mills on the east side of Jackson Avenue just north of downtown Detroit. This milling company became one of the most important businesses in downtown Detroit and was one of its mainstay industries for many years until it closed down during Prohibition in 1920. In 1833, John Daugherty settled near present-day White Diamond Golf Course on what is now south side of Woodward Avenue between Maple Street and Higgins Street. Daugherty built a log home that served as his initial residence until he replaced it with a more spacious brick structure some years later. He also established an extensive agricultural operation which produced corn, dairy products, hay and other items for local markets and sold through small stores throughout Northwest Michigan. Daugherty was a successful businessman who donated land to build numerous schools and churches within his community including Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Catholic Church (now Dearborn Cathedral), St Francis Xavier Episcopal Church (now Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Parish) and Christ Lutheran Church (later First Presbyterian). In 1853 he donated land along Woodward Avenue northwest of where present-day Hudson Road meets Woodward Avenue to establish but not operate an academy which would become known as Eastern High School; it eventually merged with nearby Clarkston High School to form Monroe Community College today. While Daugherty operated various businesses within Madison Heights he also served as mayor from 1849-1851 under then-mayor John Stratton; however due to political differences Stratton resigned from office after only two months into his term due to financial difficulties caused by increased taxes levied by Daugherty which had been authorized withoutStratton's prior approval . John Atherton moved from Flint into what became Madison Heights circa 1850s when he purchased 640 acres around current day Harding Road/Detroit Rd., making him one of the largest landowners within city limits at that time - soon followed by others such as Abram Burney , Augustus Kelley , George Wickersham Sr., Augustus Kelley Jr., Nicholas Alvord & Elias Sanger who all made sizable contributions towards developing this rapidly growing town within Wayne County's borders – making Madison Heights one of America’s most influential towns during its early days! On April 14th 1865 while Union troops besieged Fort Donelson near Nashville Tennessee they surprised Confederate forces occupying much nearer Knoxville resulting in significant losses for both sides with General Ulysses S Grant emerging victorious leading many soldiers back across the river safely towards Chattanooga before moving southward across Tennessee creating history! After weeks long Siege & Battle at Fort Donelson Union forces successfully retreated leaving behind cannons 300 yards wide & still standing today!!
