The National Guard was first established in Michigan in 1836. The Guard was originally called the Michigan Militia and it served as a militia for the state of Michigan only. In 1848, the Guard became a permanent military organization within the United States and it was initially headquartered at Soldier's Barracks in Lansing. The Guard also conducted exercises throughout the state of Michigan. In 1861, when America seceded from Great Britain, the Guards were called into service to help preserve order during the American Civil War. After the war, many of the Guardsmen returned home and they were disbanded in 1865. However, some remained active until 1895 when they were again disbanded because of budget cuts. In 1934, Congress passed an act that provided for military training for local police forces in addition to guard duty during national emergencies such as pandemics or firestorms. This law was known as The National Defense Act and it gave rise to Madison Heights' present-day National Guard unit. Since its inception, Madison Heights' current National Guard unit has played an important role in both national defense and community participation. The unit has been involved in numerous events such as parades and concerts throughout our city, including several World Cup qualifier games which have featured its contingents; most recently hosting a halftime show for Super Bowl LII on Sunday night (Feb 6) at Comerica Park Stadium!

The state of Michigan authorized the formation of a national guard on December 15, 1836. The first unit was Organized at Lansing on January 1, 1837. The first lieutenant colonel in the Michigan National Guard was George Stephenson. On November 5, 1840, the Michigan General Assembly passed an act authorizing the organization of a regiment of infantry and artillery under command of a brigadier general. On December 15th this regiment was organized at Lansing by brigade commander John Buel (Lansing) and Major-General James Wilkinson (Grosse Pointe). Colonel Augustus Porterfield commanding the artillery battalion also served with distinction in this regiment during its early years. A second act was passed on March 4th 1841 authorizing the organization of five companies for service in garrison duty designated as “the Company for Guards at Ann Arbor”, “the Company for Guards at Grand Rapids”, “the Company for Guards at Detroit”, and “the Company for Guards at Macomb”; these companies wereorchestrated and equipped by Captains Augustus Porterfield (Grand Rapids), Elijah Richardson (Detroit), Nathaniel Philbrook (Ann Arbor), Jabez Bowen (Macomb), Solomon Northrup (Ann Arbor) and Ebenezer Sprague(Detroit). In1847 three more companies were added to this original force – company A from Flint; company B from Holland Park; company C from Bay City. These companies were redesignated as follows: company A became known as First Regiment Michigan Volunteer Infantry; company B became known as Second RegimentMichigan Volunteer Infantry; company C became known as Third RegimentMichigan Volunteer Infantry. In 1861 two more organizations were authorized: Companies D and E both from Jackson Heights near Buffalo Bill's Fort Erie where they soon merged into one unit called "Second Brigade Mississippi Volunteers" which eventually became Confederate Army unit number 2nd Brigade Mississippi Volunteers under general Robert E Lee

Madison Heights was founded in 1836 by two brothers, John and James Madison. The first post office was established in 1840. The Madison Heights School District was formed in 1912. In 1916, the city of Detroit annexed the township. In 1932, the City of Detroit annexed the township and renamed it to Madison Heights. The population ofMadison Heights peaked at 27,500 in 1940 but declined to 17,000 by 1950 due to increased immigration from other parts of Michigan and abroad. By 1970, the population had decreased to 15,000 due to a variety of reasons including suburbanization and flight from downtown Detroit. However, although the population has decreased over time, there have been recent efforts to revive the community through various initiatives such as development of new housing projects and investments in education and job opportunities for residents.

In 1837, the village became a town and in 1858 it became an independent city. The population of Madison Heights grew rapidly during its heyday as a smalltown and soon there were several high-rise hotels and other businesses downtown. However, by 1920 the city had lost much of its population due to migration to Detroit and other cities. Today, only a few blocks of downtown remain from when Madison Heights was one of Michigan's most populous towns
