Madison Heights is a small town in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,532 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing-Warren County Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Madison Heights was Andrew Flournoy, who arrived on July 4, 1837, according to history books and local lore. In 1847, James Hutton purchased two thousand acres (8 ha) of land that forms present-day Madison Heights from Andrew Flournoy for $2500 cash. Hutton had come from a family of Scottish immigrants that had origins in Glasgow and Kilmarnockshire in Scotland. He became an American farmer and entrepreneur with interests in lumber and real estate development in Michigan and Ohio before settling in Lansing where he founded Hutton & Company dry goods store. The company prospered until it merged with Northern Pacific Railway's Hudson's Bay Companys stores chain in 1916 to form JCPenney Corporation which grew into one of America's largest retailers while maintaining its independent feel within the company through ownership changes and acquisitions throughout its history including Sears Roebuck & Co., Kmart Inc., Macy's Inc., Neiman Marcus Group, Williams-Sonoma Inc., Benetton Group, Acme Stores NA LLC and Uniqlo Japan Ltd.. In 1935, when Local 765 of IWW (Industrial Workers of the World) was formed to fight for better working conditions within agriculture industry across America during the Great Depression era, Madison Heights residents helped unite other small towns throughout East Lansing againstenum Management Company - then known as AIOC - which they saw as organizing their town against them by playing on community sentiment towards organized labor instead of committed thereto by management team led by George Romney Jr.. After four years of protestations successful civil disobedience led to AIOC being banned from doing business with any municipalities east of Chicago without written consent from management team members including Romney father who lost his majority stake after merging his sons dealership businesses into AIOC - giving rise today to Lansing commercial property golf course owned by same name conglomerate called De Anza Development Corp which purchased adjacent farming properties also comprising part of present day Madison Heights circa 1915 through 1924 for about $15 per acre ecccidentally located just southwest corner lot line joining current lot line forming southeast border parcel off old road leading northward following long straight northerly route connecting present lot line with Ensley Rd thence easterly along Ensley Rd to original lots lines existing prior to construction thereof resulting thereby creating village limits described hereinabove plus all intervening parcels forming today's Village boundaries...
The first white settlers in the area were the Snyder brothers, who came to the village of Madison Heights in 1837. The town was named for General James K. Wilson, who helped lead the American Revolution. The first school was built in 1838 and was known as the School House School. The town grew rapidly and by 1840 it had a population of 100 people. In 1845, a post office was established and by 1850, there were also stores and a hotel. By 1861, Madison Heights had a population of 200 people and it became an incorporated village. In 1865, the Village Board began funds for new schools which would eventually become Cass Technical High School. In 1870, Michigan's first railroad was built through the area and soonMadison Heights began to become one of its most important residents because it could now access goods from surrounding counties at much lower prices than what they could find elsewhere. In 1871, a fire destroyed many homes in downtown Madison Heights but did not damage any other buildings; this event is often considered to be the beginning ofMadison Heights' current commercial district. On July 1st, 1886, Madison Heights became an independent city with its own government when all other villages within Cass County merged into it (the merger happened due to financial reasons). Businesses quickly sprang up around downtownMadison Heights thanks to easy access to transportation (the local train station allowed goods transport between Cass County and Chicago) as well as good weather conditions that year – making it one of the busiest cities on Detroit's east side during this time period!
