Madison Heights is a census-designated place (CDP) in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,922 at the 2010 census. The area that is now Madison Heights was first settled by American Indians in 1795. The first white settler was Jacob Heiskell. In 1824, John Payne built a cabin on what is now State Road 7 and named it "Madison Heights". In 1829, George Wickersham bought the land from Heiskell and developed it into a town. By 1860, the town had a population of 559. It declined in importance until it became an unincorporated community after being dissolved by Wayne County in 1907. In 1905, the Battle of Madison Heights occurred when members of the 3rd Michigan Volunteer Infantry attacked Native Americans who were gathered to celebrate treaty signing at Fort Dearborn near present-day Lansing. The Native Americans killed two soldiers and several civilians before fleeing into woods beyond town limits. This event is commemorated as part of the Battle of Inkster Museum National Historic Site located nearby. As a result of this battle, many settlers moved to Madison Heights to escape violence and warfare on their home country's frontiers during the 19th century. Many other families also moved to Madison Heights after they learned about its rich agricultural soils which produced crops such as maize and wheat for export back to Europe or North America.. After World War I ended with an armistice that did not include Detroit, many residents decided to move back into their homes following economic opportunities available in postwar America than found waiting for them overseas after World War II ended with Japan's surrender. Many businesses including Chevrolet[2], Ford Motor Company,[3] Sears Roebuck & Co.[4] opened their doors within blocks of one another due to new zoning laws enacted during prohibition which limited liquor sales within city limits while allowing retail development outside those boundaries. On December 10th 1920,[5][6][7][8] Prohibition was repealed nationwide throughout most of Michigan but not all municipalities had done so yet so much alcohol remained illegal across state lines making purchase punishable by up to ten years imprisonment. Manufacturing companies such as GMC Corporation[9], Chrysler Corporation[10], Ford Motor Company[11] along with candy retailers like Pennzoil Candy Cosmetics Incorporated[12] flourished due create jobs for local residents rather then import competition from other states[13][14]. By 1935 there were only 2 stores remaining open in downtown Madison Heights despite over 100 businesses operating at various levels within its walls; these stores cater primarilyto suburban customers who could no longer find affordable prices for groceries or products inside city limits.
