Lincoln Park is a beautiful, wide and well-maintained park in the city of Detroit. It has a large pond, several playgrounds, a picnic pavilion, a basketball court, and more. The park was opened in 1892 as part of the city's move from downtown to the newcity center. The park is home to many famous people, such as Ulysses S. Grant and General Motors founder Charles W. Peabody. The land for Lincoln Park was donated by John Dutton and his wife Jane Addams. The Duttons were appalled at their city's conditions and decided to give away their property to relocate all of Detroit's citizens into what would become Lincoln Park. Lincoln Park has been maintained by the City of Detroit since 1919 when it was purchased by the government for $5,000 dollars. In 1938, it became part of the newly created City of Midtown through an agreement between Mayor James Knowles and then-City Councilman Nicholas Schenck Jr.. Lincoln Park is a large, open-air park in the City of Detroit, Michigan. The area has been home to many famous people, including Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy. The park is also home to the Michigan State Fairgrounds. The first time it was ever mentioned in history was in 1835 when General James K. Polk visited Detroit and saw "a populous tract of forest land [in] addition to which were two small towns (Jackson and Grosse Pointe), on the river's banks." In 1836, Detroit Mayor Lewis Cass appointed a committee to explore what could be done with the land around Ford Field and they came up with the idea of creating a large public park within the city limits. This would include lands between Dearborn Street on the north side and Woodward Avenue on the south side. They also recommended that it should have a lake or pond as its centerpiece. In 1837, Congress passed an act authorizing President Andrew Johnson to purchase 1 million acres of land withinDetroitlimits for a national public park. The president chose Lincoln Park as his choice because it was then part of what is now Wayne County and he wanted something close to downtown so that people could easily access it without having to travel farfetched distances. He also thought that it would be great for sports events such as cricket matches and football games because there would be plenty of space for spectators. The actualPurchase took place on July 10th, 1847 from Colonel Robin Henshaw of Cincinnati Ohio with 2 million dollars raised by fifty donors throughout America who contributed one dollar each towards building what we know today as “Lincoln Park”—the largest publicly owned urban recreational area in North America at that time! It didn't take long for developers to come up with plans for how this vast piece of real estate could be used; chief among them were Drury Lane Cemetery (now known as Mount Hope Cemetery) planners Frederick Law Olmsted & Sons who submitted their plan for a grand boulevard surrounding Lincolns tomb which ran from Indiana Avenue eastward through present day Gratiot Avenue before turning south along Redford Road past Present Day Ford Field whereupon entering into current day Jefferson Boulevard! Thereafter continuing northeasterly until reaching Woodward Avenue some distance southwesterly before ultimately terminating at White House Drive—an area now occupied by Lincolns old house! Despite being initially vetoed by then-Mayor George Wickersham due to protestersinvoking Constitutional rights afforded only citizens under direct government occupation (!), Open House celebrations were staged across three days late summer/early fall1849 following approval from Wickersham himself despite objections from other nearby municipalities eagerto annex much needed city services into their own jurisdictions! It wasn’t until after passage via Congressional Act 3rd Session 8th Year March 25 th 1850 followedby Executive Order 9 th Month May 5 th 1850 both signed by President Millard Fillmore thatactual opening ceremonies took place October 6 th 1850 when Drury Lane Cemetery opened its doors following renovations costingtwenty five thousand dollars funded entirely by touristsand private investors!!! All told overland routes connecting various neighborhoods currently occupy today including: Woodbridge Heights•University Village•Lenox Hill•Mount Hope Gardens•Knightsbridge Center•Southfield Meadows•Villa Park
