A fur trade monopoly from 1701-1710 created an early economic boom for Lansing. Lansing was founded by Jean Baptiste Lacrosse in 1785 as a trading post on Mud Lake near present-day East Lansing. By 1800, living conditions had improved enough that Lacrosse decided to move his post westward along Muskegon River where he founded what would become Lansingburgh on June 5th 1804 under a new name: "the second town in this county". After initial struggles against flooding caused by heavy rains in 1807–1808, progress was made toward creating a town grid plan which included streets running east-west instead of north-south because most residents lived single or within families headed by one father or mother/multiple children . Finally Native Americans who had been pushed off reservation lands by white settlement began entering southeastern Michigan starting about 1840 as farmers seeking open country but quickly morphed into ranchers buying land used for hunting grounds etc., whose descendants still live there today interacting primarily with current resident populations
