He named his new settlement "Lansing" after himself because he could find no other name that would fit all those living there at that time plus Indian word "snyder". The first town meeting held on November 6th 1797 resulted in Lt Col James Wilkinson giving notice to erect a Fortification Post at present day Arlington Heights which later became known as White Rock Road leading into town from Washtenaw Bay
