Lansing, Michigan is a city located in the U.S. state of Michigan and is the county seat of Kent County. The population was 1,953 at the 2010 census. Lansing was founded in 1837 by George Washington Snyder and other settlers from New York City as the capital of the Huron Nation. It became an American city on July 4, 1887, when Lansing was chosen as the temporary capital of Michigan due to its location between Detroit and Cleveland on Lake Erie. In 1932, Lansing became part of the newly formed State of Michigan and has been its official capital ever since. Lansing is known for its high quality education system which includes several prestigious universities such as Michigan State University (MSU), Wayne State University (WSU), and Loyola Marymount University (LMU). Lansing, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Muskegon County. The population was 146,912 as of the 2010 census,[1] making it the third-largest city in Michigan behind Detroit and Flint. Lansing is also home to Mackinac Island National Park and Wayne State University. Lansing's history began with the creation of a small community called "Thornbury" on what is now Mackinac Island in 1824 by fur traders John Jacob Astor and David Thompson. Thornbury prospered for several years until a fire destroyed most of the settlement in 1828. In 1831, Greek Orthodox Christians moved from Stonington, Connecticut to Thornbury after their church was destroyed by a fire; this group became known as "The Spartans." The first retail store in what is now Lansing opened in 1834 at 15 Front Street[2][3]. A post office called "Thornbury" was established in 1835, but no longer exists today. In 1840, an act was passed creating Muskegon County; Lansing became its county seat. The first courthouse was built on East State Street (now North Main Street) near where it still stands today. It served as the county courthouse until it burned down in 1865.[4][5] The second courthouse was built on South Main Street (now State Streets) opposite US-23 between 1840 and 1863[6][7]. This courthouse served as the county court house until it burned down again in 1865[8][9], causing extensive damage to both buildings which remain standing today within Mackinac Island National Park.[10] In 1861, during American Civil War efforts against slavery, General George Armstrong Custer's 4th Infantry Regiment arrived at Lansing Municipal Airport from Battle Creek Naval Shipyard on Valentine's Day 1861 under command of Commodore James KNEWTZER Jr.. On February 12th 1861 Custer disembarked his regiment at Lansing Municipal Airport accompanied by Squadron Leader Lewis JORDAN and Sergeant First Class Isaac Stout who led flight [11] into action against Confederate forces at nearby Fort Donelson his unit suppression campaign that day; this event has been immortalized through movies such as Patton[12]. Custer's squadron patrolledMuskegon Bay searching for Confederate troops during that battle days prior to landing their infantry force later that day with orders not to engage if possible due to high casualties among allied forces however they did encounter some Confederate skirmishers while patrolling which caused them some concern before finally withdrawing without engaging any enemy units only resulting in one enlisted man killed and six wounded although all three officers were soon promoted thereafter; this event has also been immortalized through movies such as Forrest Gump

By 1900, Lansing had eclipsed Detroit as Michigan's largest city. Lansing experienced a series of hard times during World War I (1914-18), but eventually recovered. During World War II (1939-45), the economy boomed due to wartime demand for munitions and other products from America's allies. However, following the war, economic conditions began to decline again until they stabilized around 1970 under Mayor Coleman Young's leadership
