As a result of this annexation process, many residents from Grosse Pointe Farms moved to Kentwood while others chose to remain in their original homes or move into new houses built within Detroit's boundaries (including what are now Old Bridge Township and Harper Woods). Today, most people living in eastern Kentwood identify themselves as “Detroiters” or “ locals” rather than as Kentwoodsians. However there are still some descendants of early settlers who reside here today. There has been no real growth in population since 2000 although job opportunities have increased somewhat due to relocations within metro Detroit associated with Ford Motor Company's production line expansions outside of Dearborn Heights and Highland Park

In 1836, the city of Kentwood was founded by Jabez Woods and his wife Mary. The town prospered until 1851 when a fire destroyed most of the buildings in the town. As a result,Kentwood lost its status as a commercial center and slowly declined in population over the next several decades. In 1893, it was made an incorporated municipality and experienced a resurgence in growth over the next few years thanks to new investments from various businesses and residents. However, this prosperity came to an end after World War II due to economic decline and high taxes. By 1970, Kentwood had shrunk to its present size with only about 60 residents living in the downtown area.
