Kentwood is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the east side of the Mackinac Bridge. The population was 10,868 at the 2010 census. The city is part of the Kalamazoo Metropolitan Statistical Area and its sister cities are Battle Creek and Grand Rapids. The name "Kentwood" first appeared on a map in 1812 when it was called "Canton". It was chartered as a village in 1827 by John Cranch and others, one year after Cadillac's gold discovery near Port Huron. The town was named for General George Washington Kent who had been military governor of what is now Ontario County from 1795 to 1800. In 1829, it became a town with a post office under the name of Canton. In 1830, another post office opened at Kentwood Heights which served as an upscale community for farmers and other business people until it burned down in 1865. A new post office called Canton reopened in 1872, serving as the main center for settlement until 1902 when it moved to Battle Creek and then to Grand Rapids where it remains today. As more settlers arrived to settle in central Michigan during the early 19th century, they developed small communities along rivers such as the Kawkawaddy River (later renamed White Lake) and Saginaw Bayou which would later be combined into larger villages or towns such as Lansingburg (now Houghton), East Lansing (later Southgate), Albion (later Midland), Watertown (later Warrenton), Greenville ( later West Bloomfield), Batavia (later Hollandale), Troy(now Yorkville) and many others over time. When Engine House Road became State Highway 7 between Lansingburgh/Houghton and East Lansing/Southgate in 1923, this created a village-like structure along that route including several stores, mechanics shops etc., all serving single residents rather than businesses that could have supported multiple residents or served multiple purposes within their boundaries

Kentwood is a small town in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, United States. The population was 2,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kalamazoo–Portage County metropolitan area. Kentwood was founded by Danish immigrants in 1836, and became an incorporated town in 1907. The first settlers arrived from Denmark around 1836. At first they only built outposts on the now-defunct Saginaw River colony, but soon began to settle more permanently in what is now Kentwood. The original village site was on the east side of the river between where it flows into Shiawassee and Ionia counties, near what is now Escanaba Township. The name "Kentwood" was derived from two Driftless Agate quarries that were located there at that time. The first store opened at Kentwood's current location on Main Street in 1907, and early residents developed a strong agricultural sector which continues to this day: corn, beans, wheat, potatoes and other vegetables; dairy products such as cheese and cream; forestry products such as lumber; and marble quarrying for building materials until recently (though not currently).
