Kentwood is a small town in the heart of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It is located on the east bank of the Mackinac River, about halfway between Detroit and Grand Rapids. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. The first people to live in Kentwood were Mennonites who arrived from North Dakota in 1892. They built a log cabin near where downtown now stands. A post office was established in 1896, and a store was opened in 1903. In 1911, the town became a city and was renamed Kentwood after Mayor John Fenton Kent of nearby Muskegon Heights (now Muskegon Heights Township). During World War II, Kentwood saw heavy military activity due to its strategic location as an airfield for bomber aircraft flying over central Michigan. In 1945, it became part of United States Military District 10 which encompassed all of Michigan and parts of Ohio and Wisconsin. In 1951, it reverted to its original name when it reverted back to being a city within United States Military District 10. In 1957, Kentwood lost its status as a city when it merged with neighboring Muskegon Heights into what is now called Muskegon Heights Township (and still uses that name today). However, because both cities had been incorporated since 1911 they received municipal services through local government instead of township government which would have led to their eventual annexation byMuskegon Heights Township should this happen again. Municipal services currently continue through local governments managed by village councils which are similar to individual townships in that they are responsible for providing basic services such as street cleaning and zoning regulations etc.. As per the 2006 US Census there were 2,859 residents living in Muskegon Heights Township Alone while there were 3,636 residents living within Kent Woods City limits combined

One of the most significant aspects of downtown's history is its role as a local center for trade and commerce during both before and after Michigan's admission into the Union in 1868. This period was marked by rapid growth for many northeastern Michigan communities thanks to railroad construction, including Kentwood which became one of the first towns in Michigan to be served by a train network! Not only did railroads bring access to markets far away, but they also helped promote agriculture within these communities through standardized shipping practices and increased freight volume which gave rise to what has come to be known as "the good old days" for Downtown Kentwood!
Kentwood is a city in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 22,836 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit–Warren–Dearborn Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what would become Kentwood was made on April 6, 1824 when Nicholas Ishmael and his family set up shop near present-daymicrophone along the Ottawa River. In 1830, John Skenazy settled in the area and built a log cabin on the current site of his home. One of the earliest businesses established in Kentwood was a store operated by Isaac Newell and son John Newell which opened on February 9, 1835. A post office called Kenwod had been established in 1827, but it closed operations during the Mexican War due to lack of supplies. The first doctor to serve as medical officer for Wayne County was Dr. James Hickey who arrived in Kentwood on March 3, 1829 with three patients from nearby Dearborn Heights. On December 20th, 1840 while wagon trains were crossing over Big Beaver Creek leading from Grand Rapids to Detroit for winter storage there was an accident that left five people dead and more than sixty injured including several members of Gabriel Allaire's band of French Canadians known collectively as "The Five Brothers". This event would marks one of the most tragic moments in American history as it led directly tothe American Civil War two years later when General Ulysses S Grant ordered General Alfred Terry's forces into Detroit to retake it from Confederate forces under General Robert E Howard. It didn't take long for Native Americans living around where present day microphones stand to start using those resources too; by fall 1824 they’d started building their own small cabins deep within what is now downtown Kentwood using whatever materials they could find lying around them or scavenging through trash dumpsters looking for any leftover lumber or hardware needed for their construction process. By early 1830 they’d erected enough small cabins & wigwams (16-foot square huts) & erected a few larger ones (& houses) such as White Cloud House #3 occupied by Chief Samuel McIntosh c1830-1834; Red Wing House #1 occupied by Black Hawk Indian Wife &Family c1836-1838; Eastman House constructed c1840-1841 about 1/4 mile east side OF commercial center (now Pioneer Park), NE corner Of Main Street & First Avenue; also build 2 longhouses: One built mid 1800s nearcurrent Wagon Wheel location (based off remains found at this site); One erected ca 1860s northwest corner Of First Avenue & Main Street
