The first settler in what is now Kalamazoo was John Linton, who arrived on October 15, 1796 from London via Mackinac Island. In 1801, Linton's son-in-law Nicholas Griggs established a gristmill on Grand River near present day Walled Lake Boulevard and State Street; he named it Griggs Mill after himself and his brother-in-law Samuel Gibbs. In 1824, James M Hurley platted what became known as Hurley Township east of present day Kalamazoo on land grant from Peter Taylor; he named it after himself and donated all or part of it to the Methodist church. By 1836, most of what would become Kalamazoo had been built: The first store opened at First National Bank on South Main Street in 1837 followed by others located throughout downtown until 1906 when only Oneida Trust Company remained open downtown despite heavy competition from other stores which moved into newer buildings going up around them during this time period known as “Downtown dementia” or simply “Downtown incorrect” due to the negative perceptions people had about businesses located downtown at that time
