He reached Superior Lake on September 26, 1697;[2] but his party was destroyed by a local band of Kalkaska Indians led by Chief Thunder Cloud who took exception to being asked to leave their land sacred to their own people.[3][4][5] The first permanent settler in what would become Kalamazoo was John St Clair who arrived at Saginaw River post office on November 3, 1800.[6] By 1814 he had erected a log cabin known as Old Fort St Clair; it burned down early that year whileSt Clair was away on business. He again established an outpost at Saginaw River post office late in 1814 or early 1515,[7] built a frame dwelling known as New Post Office which still stands today,[8] began trading with other Indian nations along the Upper Great Lakes region,[9][10][11] baptized some converts into Christianity,[12][13][14] heard reports of goldfields west of present day Chicago[15], returned home December 12th1800 having accomplished nothing more than establishing himself among friendly Indigenous People regional cultures before setting out westward again two weeks later

Kalamazoo, Michigan is a city in the Western Michigan region of the United States. The population was 118,521 at the 2010 census. Kalamazoo is the county seat of Kalamazoo County. It is part of the Lansing-East Lansing, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to explore and settle what is now Kalamazoo was French explorer Francois Marquette in 1805. He named it after his home village of La Malbaie on the Ottawa River in Quebec, Canada. Marquette's explorers discovered an area that would become Kalamazoo when they journeyed downriver from their original destination near Detroit in 1814 while looking for a route to California. They called this new land "the mouth of the Grand River", and later shortened it to "Kalamazoo". The first permanent settlers arrived in 1817 when John Greenough built a cabin on Cooley Creek just east of present day Gratiot Avenue and Washington Street between present day State Road 7 (now I-94) and Ford Boulevard. Greenough was one of three men who founded what is now Lansing as part of the Michigan Territory during the Mexican–American War; he also founded Battle Creek and its ville deettlement which became East Lansing. In 1824, another pioneer, Joshua Ladd, bought 120 acres (49 ha) south of Gratiot Avenue from John Greenough for $1 per acre (0·27 ha). This property would become known as Ladds Prairie after Ladd’s son developed it into farmland which continues today as Ralston Hills Farms LLC., one of Michigan’s largest food processors with operations in over 25 countries around the world Lansing had been established as a trading post by mid-1824 when George Stephenson founded Ann Arbor here with two other brothers—Samuel Morse and David Levy—and others working on Stephenson’s engineering project to build a road from Detroit to Chicago under General James Krieger’s command during America’s war with Mexico In November 1825, Krieger ordered Jamestown Road built between Ann Arbor and Cadillac along current US Highway 431/State Route 211; construction started on December 12th but only reached Alger Road about halfway before stopping due to bad weather conditions near Grosse Pointe Woods Sunday January 2nd 1830 finally reaching White Oaks through stormy conditions January 10th 1830 becoming Government Tavern where chief executive Andrew Johnson stopped January 11st 1830 while touring Government House being met at White Oaks by President Jackson who then moved onto Fort Dearborn February 9th 1830 . Part way up Alger Road some people got lost & were found dead days later by John Saginaw who took them back home On July 1st 1840 Samuel Morse gave 100 acres (40 ha) east side OF Gratiot Ave (@ Washtenaw Rd today) for church building & cemetery purposes only & not included within present limits
Kalamazoo was founded on March 17, 1817 by Captain John L. Mason and his men as the future town of Kalamazoo. The name is derived from the Indian word "kalamazoo." The first post office in Kalamazoo was established on December 12, 1819. In 1827, the first courthouse was built and it remains in use today. In 1835, Kalamazoo became a port on the Great Lakes and began exporting goods to Europe. In 1865, Kalamazoo became one of the cities that formed the Michigan City Union with other cities including Detroit and Grand Rapids. The city lost its status as a port in 1957 when it closed its harbor to commercial vessels.
