Kalamazoo is a city in the Western Michigan region of the United States. The population was 33,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kalamazoo County and is located on Lake Huron. Founded in 1837 as a trading post by fur traders, Kalamazoo rapidly grew as a mill town and manufacturing center during the late 19th century and early 20th century. In 1925, it became an official city with passage of an act by the Michigan Legislature. A large number of displaced Native Americans from Battle Creek moved to Kalamazoo in 1834-35 when that community was destroyed by floodwaters from the Kawkawa River. At first, few people lived in what is now downtown Kalamazoo because there were no permanent buildings or homes available until after 1840 when lumberyards opened up along Wabash Avenue and much development took place around this time including new churches, schools and businesses. The first municipal election held inKalamazoo occurred on November 3, 1847; Jane Addams won reelection unopposed as mayor with over 78% of the vote cast. On December 1,1847 City Council passed ordinances creating streets gridiron plan like those then current in most American cities with three blocks wide each side running north-south while east-west streets ran parallel to one another (these plan were later eliminated). It should be noted that lack of city boundaries at this time led to areas such as North Park Heights being included within the limits of both Kalamazoo andBattle Creek even though they had no connection to either municipality whatsoever other than through their shared proximity to water supplies and transportation routes. Kalamazoo, Michigan is a city in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan located on the Kalamazoo River. The population was 57,661 at the 2010 census. Settled by Native Americans in 1795, Kalamazoo became a town in 1836 and was named after George Washington's Mount Rushmore National Monument. The current city was founded in 1871 by gold seekers who discovered gold on the riverbank near present-day downtown. It grew rapidly due to its location as an important manufacturing center for aluminum products and other materials during the 1930s and 1940s. In 1954, it became a state capital. In 2006, Kalamazoo lost its status as a U.S. capital after President George W. Bush moved his headquarters from Washington D.C.. The history of Kalamazoo goes back more than 500 years to when indigenous people lived hereabouts from around 2200 BC until about 1600 AD when European explorers arrived seeking minerals and trade goods with local tribesmen. French traders also visited this area during this time period but no settlements were established because of lack of available water or food sources for humans and animals combined with hunting opportunities being too great for small villages at that time frame given how far westward travel had recently become via fur trading expeditions led by white men such as Pierre Dorion (1598-1664) and La Salle (1679-1766). In 1795, settlers began to arrive from what is now Upper Canada through land grant applications received from General John Ellice in anticipation of British Columbia becoming part of America following the Seven Years' War (1756-1763). When news reached Quebec that British troops had been landed at Detroit they decided not to pursue American expansion into Canada but instead march northward under cover of darkness on November 25th 1795 to confront American forces that were entrenched at Fort Mackinac on Lake Huron just south of modern day Kalamazoo City Limits which then included all present day southern Grand Rapids County including present day Escanaba Township which lay within modern-day Holland Township which would later become Lansing County seat before falling back eastward into Mackinac County under British control following the Battle of Fort Dearborn where 10 English officers and 250 Canadian soldiers were killed while repelling Ulysses S Grant's attack against Crown Point on October 15th 1813 resulting in forfeiture of Canada's North Western Territory ending Britain's participation in North America proper for over 130 years! After Quebec withdrew their application for assistance from Great Britain it seemed inevitable that one or more new Canadien provinces would form following Northwest India Company efforts to set up posts along Lake Superior between Georgian Bay and Hudson Bay some 60 miles long extending inland beyond today’s Marquette County towards Duluth Minnesota Territory claimed by France prior to her acquisition thereof by Great Britain; these posts were intended as buffer zones between British Indians living along Lakes Superior & Huron/Escanaba & French Canadians occupying lands stretching further inland towards DuluthMinnesota Territory claimed previously by France& subjecting those same Indian groups living near Lakes Superior & Huron/Escanabato forced labor dictated by necessity since
