The brigade remained in existence until 1978 when it was disbanded due to budgetary cuts. However, the unit has since resurfaced in various forms throughout southern Michigan as part of various patriot programs. Today, there are approximately 21,000 members active with the National Guard in Michigan. This number does not include reserve components which numbers closer to 50,000 individuals across the state. In 1955, Governor George Romney signed legislation authorizing purchase of surplus military equipment from Great Britain for use by the Michigan Army National Guard at no cost to taxpayers. The program is still in effect today and allows donations of new or used hardware including vehicles, trucks, cannons and grenades to be sent back home to be used by our guardsmen within our state’s borders should another world war happen without any conflict erupting again! Additionally, many local businesses have donated items such as cookware or clothes so that soldiers can stay warm while deployed outside their communities; this assistance often extends beyond just winter months when troops are headquartered out of town. Throughout all these years there has never been one event where citizens were asked not to give presents because any means possible would be appreciated!
